Introduction
In the National Basketball Association, the hoop is 10 feet (3.048 m) above the ground. This is considerably higher than in other levels of basketball, such as college basketball and high school basketball, where the hoop is only 3–4 inches (7.6–10.2 cm) higher than the ground. There are also a few leagues for younger children that use baskets of much smaller heights.
The History of the NBA
The National Basketball Association (NBA) is the professional men’s basketball league in North America. It was founded in New York City on June 6, 1946, as the Basketball Association of America (BAA).[1][2] The league adopted the name of the National Basketball Association at its founding meeting in August 1949. The NBA is one of four major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada, the other three being Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Football League (NFL), and the National Hockey League (NHL).[3]
The league currently consists of 30 teams: 29 in the United States and 1 in Canada. The NBA is an active member of USA Basketball (USAB),[4] which is recognized by FIBA (also known as the International Basketball Federation) as the national governing body for basketball in the United States.[5][6] The NBA has played a significant role in popularizing basketball around the world.[7][8]
With players from all over the globe, it is one of the most international leagues,[9][10] currently featuring players from 42 countries.[11] In its early years, particularly during World War II, many American players were drafted into military service.[12][13] After initial struggles to integrate African American players,[14][15][16] some black players broke through such as Chuck Cooper,[17][18] Earl Lloyd,[19][20] and Connie Hawkins.[21][22/23/24 contemporary stars such as LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade have helped win championships for their respective teams.
The Current NBA
The current NBA has a hoop that is 10 feet tall. This is the same height that has been used in the league since it was founded in 1946. The height of the hoop has been standardized across all courts in the league, so every team plays on an equal playing field.
