How to Distress a Baseball Cap
Contents
This tutorial will show you how to distress a baseball cap using two different methods: sandpaper and bleach.
Supplies
You will need the following supplies in order to distress a baseball cap: a baseball cap, a pair of scissors, a dish soap, a bowl of water, and a hair dryer.
Baseball cap
A baseball cap is a type of soft cap with a rounded crown and a visor, and often with a brim in the front. The front of the cap typically contains designs or logos of sports teams (namely baseball teams), and the back of the cap may be fitted to the wearer’s head size or it may have an adjustable strap, such as a plastic strap, Velcro strap, or snapback.
Scissors
In order to cut the fabric of the baseball cap, you will need a sharp pair of scissors. scissors with very sharp blades will make it easier to cut through the fabric and create a neater edge. If you do not have access to a sharp pair of scissors, you can also use a rotary cutter.
Lighter
Light colors will show more wear and tear easily, so if you want your cap to look like it’s been through the wars, go for a light color!
-Beige
-Khaki
-Light blue
-Light grey
Tweezers
Tweezers are a great way to remove lint, dust and other small particles from your baseball cap. You can find them at most stores that sell sewing supplies.
Instructions
Whether you’re a diehard baseball fan or just enjoy wearing a relaxed-fit cap, you can give any baseball cap an aged and distressed look. This will give your baseball cap a unique look that is perfect for any casual outfit. With just a few supplies and some simple steps, you can easily distress your own baseball cap at home.
Cut the brim off the baseball cap
Start by cutting the brim off the baseball cap. You can use scissors or a rotary cutter for this. If you are using a rotary cutter, be sure to use a cutting mat to protect your surfaces.
Next, cut 1-inch strips of fabric along the seam of the baseball cap. You will need four strips total.
Now, cut two more strips of fabric, each 2-inches wide. These will be used to tie off the end of the baseball cap.
Finally, cut a small hole in the top center of the baseball cap. This will be used to thread the strip of fabric through.
Use the lighter to singe the edges of the cut brim
Use the lighter to singe the edges of the cut brim. This will create a distressed look and also help to keep the fabric from fraying. You can also use scissors to distress the brim by cutting random slits along the edge.
Use the tweezers to pull off any loose threads
1. Use the tweezers to pull off any loose threads. If the cap is new, skip to the next step.
2. Cut small slits into the bill of the cap using the razor blade. Be sure not to cut too deeply or too many slits, or the bill will fall off.
3. Use your fingers to fray the edges of the slits you just made.
4. Rub dirt or coffee grounds into the fabric of the cap. The more you rub, the dirtier the cap will become.
5. Dip a corner of the rag into the stain and rub it into the fabric of the cap. Be sure to cover all areas of the cap with a light layer of stain.
6. Allow the stain to dry completely before wearing your newly distressed baseball cap!
Distress the baseball cap to your liking!
There are many ways to distress a baseball cap, so feel free to get creative! For a more distressed look, you can try bleaching the cap or adding various tears and holes. You can also add different stains or dirt marks to create a used look. If you want a cleaner look, simply sanding down the bill and visor of the cap will give it a more worn-in appearance.
Once you have distressed the baseball cap to your liking, be sure to wash it in cold water and let it air dry. This will help set the distressed fabric and prevent any further damage.
