How to Make Baseball Roses

Check out this tutorial on how to make baseball roses! These are a perfect gift for the baseball fan in your life.

What You Need

For this project you will need Jersey fabric (or another knit fabric), scissors, a needle and thread, and wire. You will also need a hot glue gun and glue sticks.

Materials

– Baseball
– X-Acto knife
– Wire cutters
– Floral Tape
– Floral wire

Tools

-1/4 inch dowel rod
-Tape measure
-Ruler or a piece of scrap wood
-Marker
-Wood glue
-Scissors or wire cutters
-Floral wire
-Needle nose pliers
-Stem wire (optional)

Step One

First, you need to purchase a flower. The most important aspect of this step is to make sure that the flower is fresh. You can buy a rose at a grocery store, or you can go to a local florist. Once you have your flower, you need to cut off the stem.

Cut the stem

Using a sharp knife, cut the stem about an inch from the base of the rose. Cut at an angle so that the stem can later be inserted into the floral foam easily.

Strip the leaves

Gently remove all the leaves from the stem, being careful not to damage or break the stem. Start at the bottom of the stem and work your way up, pinching each leaf between your thumb and forefinger and then sliding it off.

Step Two

Before you can make your baseball roses, you need to have the supplies. For this project, you will need baseballs, green felt, hot glue, wire cutters, and floral wire. You can find all of these items at your local craft store. Once you have gathered all of your supplies, you are ready to move on to step two.

Soak the baseball in water

Start by soaking the baseball in water for at least 24 hours. This will help to soften the leather and make it easier to work with. You may need to weights the ball down with a can or a rock so that it is fully submerged.

Cut the baseball in half

Use a sharp knife to cut the baseball in half crosswise. You will end up with two semicircles.

Step Three

After you have completed the first two steps, you will need to purchase some baseballs. You can find these at your local sporting goods store or online. Once you have your baseballs, you will need to cut off the top of the ball.

Insert the stem into the baseball

To make a baseball rose, start by trimming the stem of the baseball so that it’s about 3-4 inches long. Next, use a sharp knife to make a slit in the side of the baseball, starting at the bottom and stopping about halfway up. Then, insert the stem of the rose into the slit. Finally, twist the stem to secure it in place.

Wrap the baseball around the stem

Wrap the baseball around the stem of the rose, starting at the base of the bloom and working your way down. This will secure the bloom to the stem and help support the weight of the baseball. If you’re using a real baseball, be careful not to damage the seams.

Step Four

Now that you have all of your supplies, it’s time to start making your baseball roses! You will need: 1 baseball, scissors, wire, hot glue, pliers, ribbon, and a real rose. If you don’t have a real rose, you can use any other flower, but the baseball rose will last longer.

Tape the baseball to the stem

To make a baseball rose, you will need:
-a baseball
-thin wire
-tape
-wire cutters
-pliers
First, take the thin wire and wrap it around the base of the baseball. Make sure that the wire is tight against the baseball, but don’t wrap it too tightly or else it will be difficult to remove later on. Once the wire is wrapped around the base of the ball, use the pliers to twist the two ends of the wire together so that it is secure. Next, use the tape to wrap around the base of the ball, covering up the wire. This will help to secure the ball to the stem and also make sure that no one gets cut on the wire when they are handling the baseball rose. Finally, use the wire cutters to trim off any excess wire or tape. Your baseball rose is now ready to be displayed!

Trim the excess baseball

Now that the baseball is secure, you can trim off any excess. For a standard size baseball, you should have about 2-3 inches (5-7.5 cm) of excess. If you have too much excess, it will be difficult to secure the baseball in the next step.

Step Five

Gather the stems of the flowers together, holding them as close to the base of the blooms as possible. If necessary, trim the stems so they are all the same length.

Arrange the leaves around the baseball

Arrange the leaves around the baseball so that they are evenly distributed. If you are using a real baseball, you can wrap the twine around the baseball a few times before attaching the leaves. This will help keep the leaves in place. Once you are happy with the arrangement, use the hot glue gun to attach the leaves to the baseball. Make sure that you do not glue the leaves to each other; they should only be glued to the baseball.

Tape the leaves to the stem

Use green floral tape to attach the leaves to the stem, covering the entire length of the wire. Start at the bottom of the stem and work your way up, attaching 3 or 4 leaves on each side. Once you reach the top of the stem, coil the excess wire around itself to create a small loop. This will be used to attach the rose to whatever surface you’re using.

Step Six

For this step, you will need a hot glue gun, a bamboo skewer, and green floral tape. First, take your bamboo skewer and glue it to the bottom of the baseball. Next, start wrapping the green floral tape around the base of the skewer, working your way up. Make sure to wrap tightly so that the tape adheres well to the bamboo.

Cut the stem to the desired length

Using a sharp knife or gardening shears, cut the stem of the rose to the desired length. If you are using the rose as a boutonniere, cut it so that it will fit comfortably in a suit pocket without protruding too much. For a corsage, cut the stem so that it can be pinned easily to a dress or blouse.

Enjoy your baseball rose!

Your baseball rose is now complete! You can display it in a vase, or give it to a special baseball fan in your life.

To keep your baseball rose looking its best, make sure to keep the water level high in the vase and mist the petals regularly. Replace the water every few days, and enjoy your beautiful baseball rose!
