How to Replace a Grip on a Tennis Racquet

If you’re a tennis player, then you know that a good grip is essential for playing your best game. But over time, your grip can start to wear down and need to be replaced. In this blog post, we’ll show you how to replace a grip on a tennis racquet.

Materials

In order to replace a grip on a tennis racquet, you will need the following items: grip, scissors, adhesive, and a towel.

New grip

You will need a new grip, grip tape, scissors, and a hair dryer.

Grip solvent

Naphtha is a powerful grip solvent that can be used to remove an old grip or to clean an area of the grip that is particularly dirty. Naphtha is available at hardware stores.

Grip tape

Grip tape is the common term for an adhesive-backed film that is applied to the top surface of a racquet’s handle. It provides extra traction between the player’s hand and the racquet for a better grip, which can improve control. It also helps to absorb shock and vibration from impacts with the ball. Grip tape is available in different thicknesses, colors, and textures.

Steps

To replace the grip on a tennis racquet, first remove the old grip. To do this, you will need a grip remover tool. You can find this tool at most sporting goods stores. Once you have the grip remover tool, unscrew the old grip and remove it from the racquet.

Remove the old grip

1. Remove the old grip. If the grip is in good condition, you can reuse it.

2. Clean the handle of the racquet with a cloth and some alcohol to remove any dirt or grease.

3. Wrap the new grip around the handle, making sure that the end of the grip lines up with the end of the handle.

4. Start at the bottom of the grip and work your way up, applying pressure as you go to secure the grip in place.

5. When you get to the top of the grip, cut off any excess material with a sharp knife.

Use a utility knife to cut off the old grip

First, you’ll need to remove the old grip. Use a utility knife to cut off the old grip, being careful not to damage the underlying layer of tape. Next, use sandpaper or a grips stripper to remove any residue from the old grip and rough up the surface of the underlying tape.

Apply grip solvent to the old grip

Use a grip solvent to loosen the old grip. Apply the solvent generously to the grip, making sure to get into all the nooks and crannies. Allow the solvent to sit for a few minutes to ensure that it has time to work.

Remove the old grip

Use a knife or scissors to remove the old grip. If the grip is glued on, apply heat to the grip with a hair dryer for one minute. This will help to loosen the glue. Use a knife or scissors to remove the old grip.

Clean the handle

Wash the handle of your tennis racket with a little dish soap and warm water. This will remove any dirt, sweat, or other oils that may be on the surface. Use a soft cloth or sponge to avoid damaging the racket. Rinse the handle well and dry it completely with a clean towel.

Wipe off any residue from the old grip

Before you can start fresh with a new grip, you’ll need to remove any remnants of the old one. Old grips can leave a sticky residue on the handle of your racquet that will make it difficult for the new grip to adhere. Use a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol or vinegar to wipe away any gunk. If the residue is particularly stubborn, you may need to use a mild abrasive, like sandpaper, to remove it. Just be sure to wipe away any grit before moving on to the next step.

Apply grip solvent to the handle

Most racquet companies will recommend a certain type of grip solvent, but you can use any kind of liquid soap or dishwashing detergent. Apply the grip solvent to the handle of your racquet, making sure to cover the entire surface. Work the solvent into the handle with your fingers, using a Circular motion.

Wipe off any residue from the handle

To begin, you will need to remove the old grip from the racquet. Start by peeling back the edge of the grip at one end of the handle. Use your fingers to slowly work the grip off of the handle, being careful not to tear it. Once the grip is removed, wipe off any residue from the handle with a clean cloth.

Install the new grip

Unscrew the old grip and remove it. If you are reusing the old grip tape, cut it into strips that are about 3 inches wide. If you are using new grip tape, start with a strip that is about 6 inches long. Wrap the grip tape around the handle of the racquet, starting at the bottom and working your way up.

Apply grip solvent to the handle

If you’re installing an overgrip, cut off the old one with a sharp knife, being careful not to cut into the graphite of the racket. Grip solvent will dissolve any adhesive residue left on the handle. Apply it with a clean cloth; then wipe off the excess and allow the handle to dry completely.

Wrap the new grip around the handle

To replace the grip on your tennis racquet, you’ll need some grip tape, a utility knife, and a new grip. Make sure to clean the handle of your racquet before you start so the new grip will adhere properly.

1. Start by wrapping the new grip around the bottom of the handle, making sure that the end of the grip is even with the bottom of the handle.

2. Continue wrapping the grip up the handle, making sure to keep it tight and even as you go.

3. Once you reach the top of the handle, use your utility knife to trim off any excess grip.

4. That’s it! Your racquet is now ready to use with a brand new grip.

Apply grip tape to the new grip

If you’re using an overgrip, you can start from the bottom and work your way up. If you’re using a replacement grip, start from the top and work your way down.

1. Apply a generous amount of grip solvent to the inside of the grip.

2. Starting at the bottom of the grip (for an overgrip) or at the top of the grip (for a replacement grip), begin winding the grip tape around the handle.

3. Continue winding the grip tape until you reach the end of the handle. Trim off any excess tape with a sharp knife or scissors.

4. Allow the solvent to dry completely before using your racquet again.
