How to Wash Tennis Shoes in the Washer

If your shoes are looking a little worse for wear and you don’t have time to hand wash them, you can throw them in the washer. Here’s how to do it.

Pre-treat shoes with a stain remover

If your shoes are extremely dirty or have stubborn stains, pre-treat them with a stain remover before washing. Apply the stain remover to a clean cloth, and rub it into the stained areas of the shoes. Let the shoes sit for a few minutes to allow the stain remover to work, then proceed to wash them as usual.

Place shoes in the washer on a delicate cycle

Tennis shoes can be washed in the washing machine, but you need to take a few precautions to prevent them from being damaged in the process. First, always place your shoes in the washer on a delicate cycle. This will help protect the material and the shape of your shoes. Second, use a gentle detergent when washing your shoes. You don’t want to use a harsh detergent that could damage the material. Finally, make sure to remove your shoes from the washer as soon as the cycle is done. Allowing them to sit in the wet environment for too long can cause damage.

Add a mild detergent

If your shoes are particularly dirty or smelly, add a mild detergent to the washing machine along with your shoes. Add just enough detergent to get the job done—using too much will make it difficult to rinse all the soap out of your shoes, and can also damage your washing machine.

Let the shoes air dry

Before you put your shoes in the washer, remove any dirt or debris with a soft bristled brush.thencheck the shoes for any removable parts, like insoles or laces.Take these out before washing.Next, stuff each shoe with a clean towel to help protect them from banging around in the washer.

Once your shoes are prepped, set your washing machine to the delicate or low-heat cycle and add in a gentle detergent. If you have extra-stinky shoes, you can also add 1/2 cup of baking soda to the wash.

Let the shoes air dry. once they’re done in the washer, stuff each one with a dry towel and let them air dry overnight.
