The WWE Championship
The WWE Championship is a world heavyweight championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE, currently defended on their Raw brand. It is one of WWE’s two flagship titles, alongside the Universal Championship which is also defended on the Raw brand. The current champion is Drew McIntyre, who is in his second reign.
The WWE World Heavyweight Championship
The WWE World Heavyweight Championship is a world heavyweight championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE on the SmackDown brand. It is one of two world titles in the WWE, alongside the WWE Universal Championship that was created for the Raw brand as a result of the 2016 WWE draft. The current champion is AJ Styles, who is in his first reign.
The title was first introduced in 1963 by the then-World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) as the WWWF World Heavyweight Championship, following the promotion seceding from the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA). The inaugural champion was Buddy Rogers. Since its inception, the title has undergone many name changes due to company name changes and external circumstances. It was renamed several times within the original WWWF until it finally became exclusive to WWWF’s successor promotion, World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1979; first as simply “WWF World Heavyweight Championship” and later that year to “WWF Heavyweight Championship”. In 2002, when then-owner of WCW Vince McMahon bought out his company along with its assets and took full control of both WWF and WCW under their umbrella company World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), McMahon immediately retired all WCW titles except for this one and branded it exclusive to the SmackDown! brand; he also unified his own WWF title with it and thus created what is today known as “the Undisputed WWF Championship”. The belt has also been referred to as “the Big Gold Belt”, more commonly associated with former wrestler Hulk Hogan’s time as champion from 1984–1988; however every WWWF/WWF/WWE Champion since 1983 to predecessor NWA predecessor conditions has been issued with a new Big Gold Belt after winning their respective championship pursuant to legendary wrestler Pat Patterson being credited with coming up with its design while working behind-the-scenes on behalf of former promoter Vincent J McMahon Sr., which diverged from prior looks given to National Wrestling Alliance champions dating back to 1949 that were typically a generic leather strap.
Despite its name, there have yet to be more than three superstars recognized by WWE as legitimate holders of this championship at one time; thus making it one of only two fully Unified Championships in professional wrestling without ever vacating or becoming inactive or defunct due under certain conditions like other titles. As a result, The Rock became second superstar after Hogan himself ten years prior to become one of three men simultaneously recognized as world heavyweight champion alongside Booker T and Kurt Angle when he won it for a sixth time at Backlash in 2002.
The WWE United States Championship
The WWE United States Championship is a professional wrestling championship contested in the American promotion WWE on the Raw brand. It was created as the NWA United States Heavyweight Championship on September 23, 1963, by the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), and has been defended in WWE since January 3, 2017.
The current champion is Andrade, who is in his first reign. There have been a total of 108 reigns among 65 wrestlers. The title has been vacated 12 times and it has been contested under its current name since 2016. It was previously known as the NWA United States Heavyweight Championship (1963–1986), WCW United States Heavyweight Championship (1991–2001), and WWE United States Championship (2003–2016).
In 2017, then-WWE Cruiserweight Champion T.J. Perkins became the inaugural champion when he defeated Brian Kendrick in the finals of a tournament on January 29. The title then transitioned to Raw when Perkins was drafted there during the Superstar Shake-up that April. The title has since switched hands between AJ Styles, Kevin Owens, Roman Reigns, Jinder Mahal and Shinsuke Nakamura before being won by Andrade in 2019.
The WWE Intercontinental Championship
The WWE Intercontinental Championship is a professional wrestling championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE on the SmackDown brand. It is one of two secondary titles in the WWE, complementing the WWE Championship. The current champion is Finn Bálor, who is in his second reign.
The title was established under the then-name World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1979, and later became exclusive to SmackDown in 2002 when then-SmackDown General Manager Stephanie McMahon introduced it as a counterpart title to Raw’s then-new WWE Undisputed Championship. The intercontinental title has been defended on Raw numerous times over the years, including a period of time when it was generally considered to be one of WWE’s top championships. As a result of WWE recognizing its lineage, it claims that it has been active for 38 years.
In 2017, with then-WWE Champion Jinder Mahal rarely defending it on television due to his status as a villainous character, WWE began referring to Mahal’s reign as “the Modern-Day Maharaja’s first reign”, reaffirming that the title has been indeed active for nearly four decades.
Origin
In 1979, Ted DiBiase defeated Ken Patera to win the vacant WWF Intercontinental Championship at a house show in Pueblo, Colorado. The title was not mentioned on television for almost a year until Pat Patterson defeated The Sharper Image “Robot” at Madison Square Garden in 1980 to become the inaugural champion.[1][2] Patterson lost the title to Pedro Morales at MSG two months later.[3] In January 1981, Gerald Brisco found Harley Race cheating with Patera and Morales backstage and attacked them both.[4] This led to Brisco winning the title from Morales three days later.[5][6] Race eventually regained it in May of that year after Brisco was injured,[7] but lost it back to Morales two months later at The Brawl to End It All.[8][9] Morales would hold onto it until October 12 when he was defeated by Don Muraco via disqualification at Shea Stadium.[10][11] On November 30, WWF Commissioner Hisashi Shinma presented Muraco with an award for being “the most popular wrestler in America”.[12][13] Afterwards Ray Stevens (with ref Tiger Tasker) came out and stole Muraco’s trophy.[14] On December 14 at Madison Square Garden,[15][16] Stevens won an eight-man tournament[17] by lastly defeating Adrian Adonis via submission with an armbar.[18][19][20] Afterwards Stevens began promoting himself as “the new Intercontinental Heavyweight Champion”.[21][22]”

The championship was first introduced as the World Tag Team Championship on October 20, 2002, a title that was created and promoted by the then-World Wrestling Federation (WWF) after the promotion purchased World Championship Wrestling (WCW). It became vacant when the final holders, The Dudley Boyz (Bubba Ray Dudley and D-Von Dudley), failed to defend it at Survivor Series on November 17 that year. It remained inactive until March 2003, when it was reactivated as the WWE Tag Team Championship. The original World Tag Team Championship was then unified with the WWE Tag Team Championship in August 2010, resulting in the retirement of the former title.
In 2016, WWE reintroduced its brand split and created two separate rosters for its television programs Raw and SmackDown with each show having their own set of titles; among them were separate tag team championships for each brand. As a result, the WWE Tag Team Championship on Raw was established for that show’s exclusive tag team division while SmackDown created the Universal Tag Team Championship for its own tag teams.
