How to Wrap a Tennis Racket Grip

Introduction

Wrapping a tennis racket grip is not difficult, but it does take a little practice to get the feel for it. The good news is that once you know how to do it, you can wrap any size or shape racket grip in just a few minutes. In this article we’ll show you how to wrap a tennis racket grip using two different methods: the wrap-around method and the traditional method.

What You’ll Need

-A cloth measuring tape
-A roll of overgrip
-Scissors
-A sheet of sandpaper (optional)

Step One

Choose the size of grip you will need. You can measure your hand or the grip of an old racket to determine the size. Most racket companies will make grips in several sizes for adults and children. The most common sizes are 4 1/4, 4 3/8, and 4 1/2 inches.

Step Two
Purchase a can of grip solvent and a roll of 2-inch adhesive tape from your local sporting goods store.

Step Three
Remove the old grip from the racket by soaking it in the solvent for about 10 minutes. Use a putty knife to help pry it off, if necessary.

Step Four
Clean the surface of the racket with rubbing alcohol to remove any residue from the old grip and solvent. Let it dry completely before proceeding.

Step Five
Begin wrapping the new grip at the bottom of the handle and work your way up, overlapping each layer by about half an inch. When you get to the top of the handle, trim off any excess tape with a sharp knife.

Step Two

Now that you have your supplies, it’s time to get started. Begin by cutting the end of the grip off at a 45-degree angle. This will help the end of the grip sit flush against the racket handle without any gaps. Next, take the overgrip and start wrapping it from the bottom of the racket handle. Make sure you wrap tightly and evenly as you go.

To secure the overgrip, use tape. Start by making a small X shape with two pieces of tape on top of each other. Wrap the excess around to the underside of the racket handle and secure it tightly. You can use as much or as little tape as you like, but make sure it feels snug and secure before moving on to the next step.

Step Three

After you have finished the basic wrapping, you will need to do a figure eight around the grip. Start at the top of the grip and go down to the bottom, making sure to keep the tape tight (but not too tight). Make sure that the figure eight covers the entire grip, and then trim off any excess tape.

Step Four

Lay the racket face down on a flat surface. Place the end of the grip at the top of the racket’s handle, making sure that the adhesive strip is lined up with the edge of the handle. Slowly begin to wrap the grip around the handle, applying pressure as you go so that it sticks in place. When you get to the end of the grip, make sure that the adhesive strip is lined up with the edge of the handle, then cut off any excess grip with a sharp knife.

Step Five

After you’ve cut the overgrip to size and positioned it in the middle of the grip, it’s time to start wrapping.

To begin, hold the end of the overgrip in your left hand with about an inch (2.5 cm) sticking out. Take the loose end of the grip tape in your right hand, and place it underneath the overgrip so that the sticky side is facing up. Then, wrap the grip tape around both the overgrip and racket handle until you’ve made one complete revolution.

Now, continue wrapping the grip tape around the handle, making sure to overlap each revolution by about half. Once you’ve made 6-8 revolutions (or until you’ve reached the bottom of the racket handle), it’s time to move on to step six.

Step Six

Do a second layer of grip tape, this time going in the opposite direction. Start at the top and work your way down. Again, make sure the grip tape is tight and free of wrinkles or bubbles.
