As of the 2020 season, there are 32 NFL teams. These teams are divided into two conferences: the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). Each conference is further divided into four divisions: North, South, East, and West.
The History of the NFL
National Football League (NFL) teams have been in existence since the late 19th century. The first professional team was the Allegheny Athletic Association, which was formed in 1898. The NFL was not officially founded until 1920, when it was known as the American Professional Football Association. In 1922, the NFL changed its name to the National Football League.
The NFL currently consists of 32 teams, divided into two conferences: the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). Each conference is further divided into four divisions: North, South, East, and West.
The AFC is made up of 16 teams, while the NFC has 14 teams. The two additional teams in the AFC are the Indianapolis Colts and the Pittsburgh Steelers. These two teams are considered to be original members of the NFL.

If these expansion plans go ahead, it would mean that the NFL would have 34 teams. This would be the first time since 2002 that the league has had more than 32 teams.
