Matthews attended Agoura High School in Agoura Hills, where he played football under head coach Jack Woodward. During his high school career, Matthews had 97 tackles and 10 sacks. While attending USC, Matthews played linebacker for the Trojans from 2004 to 2008. In 2005 as a freshman, he appeared in 12 games as a reserve linebacker and special teams player, amassing eight tackles on defense and seven on special teams.
