Why did he leave WWE?
After a very successful career in WWE, professional wrestler Cody Rhodes decided to leave the company in 2016. There are various reasons why he chose to leave, but the main one seems to be that he was unhappy with his position in WWE.
His issues with the creative team
In an interview with Chris Jericho on the Talk Is Jericho podcast, Cody opened up about his problems with WWE’s creative team and said that he felt like his character was being held back.
“I had a lot of pitched ideas that were never used or seen and it just got to a point where I was like, ‘I don’t know what else to do here,” Rhodes said.
Rhodes also mentioned that he was unhappy with how WWE was using his wife, Brandi Rhodes. He felt that WWE was not utilizing her properly and that led to him asking for his release.
His frustration with his character
Cody Rhodes was frustrated with his character in WWE. In an interview with Chris Jericho, he said that he felt like he was stuck in a rut and not being used to his full potential. He pitched creative ideas to WWE, but they were often rejected. This led to him requesting his release from WWE in 2016.
What has he been up to since leaving WWE?
In May 2016, after being with WWE for almost a decade, Cody Rhodes requested his release from the company. Since then, he has been on a mission to show the world that he is more than just a guy who used to wrestle for WWE. He has wrestled all over the world, for different companies, and has even started his own promotion.
His work in New Japan Pro Wrestling
Since leaving WWE in 2016, Rhodes has been working for New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW), where he is a former one-time IWGP Intercontinental Champion and a two-time IWGP United States Heavyweight Champion. He is also a founding member of the Bullet Club stable. In December 2020, he won the NJPW World Tag League with Hiroshi Tanahashi, marking his first time winning the tournament.
In January 2021, at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 15 in Tokyo Dome, Rhodes defeated Kota Ibushi to win the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, becoming the first American-born wrestler to win the title.
His work with Ring of Honor
Since leaving WWE in 2016, Cody Rhodes has been kept very busy with his work in the independent circuit. He is currently signed to Ring of Honor (ROH), where he is a one-time ROH World Champion, a two-time ROH World Tag Team Champion (with the Young Bucks), and a one-time ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Champion (with the Young Bucks and Marty Scurll).
Rhodes is also a member of the Bullet Club, a stable that also includes the likes of Kenny Omega, the Young Bucks, Marty Scurll, and Hangman Page. Under the Bullet Club banner, Rhodes has held the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championship (with Hangman Page) and the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship.
Will he ever return to WWE?
Cody Rhodes is an American professional wrestler and actor. He is signed to All Elite Wrestling (AEW), where he performs under the ring name Cody. He is the current AEW World Champion in his first reign. He is also a former one-time WWE Tag Team Champion as part of Team Rhodes Scholars, and a one-time Intercontinental Champion.
The possibility of him returning
It’s no secret that Cody Rhodes isn’t happy with his former employer, WWE. He’s made his feelings very clear in interviews and on social media. But despite all the negativity, there’s still a chance he could make his way back to WWE someday.
In a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet, Rhodes was asked if he would ever consider returning to WWE. He said he would “never say never” but it would have to be under the right circumstances.
“I think it would have to be the right circumstance,” said Rhodes. “I think it would have to be something where I felt like I owed it to the fans or I owed it to myself or even more importantly, I owed it to my family.”
Rhodes has made a lot of progress in his career since leaving WWE. He’s become one of the top stars in independent wrestling and has even ventured into acting and directing. So it’s understandable why he wouldn’t want to go back to WWE unless it was under the right circumstances.
Only time will tell if Cody Rhodes will ever return to WWE, but stranger things have happened in the world of professional wrestling.
What he would need to do to return
In order to return to WWE, Cody Rhodes would need to sign a new contract with the company. Considering that he is now one of the top names in All Elite Wrestling, it is unlikely that WWE would be able to offer him anything close to what he is currently earning. In addition, Cody has said that he has no interest in returning to WWE under any circumstances.
