Is NBA Live Coming Back?
Contents
Is NBA Live coming back? It’s been a few years since we’ve seen a new game in the series, and with NBA 2K20 now out, fans are wondering if EA Sports is ever going to return to the basketball simulation genre. Here’s what we know so far.
The History of NBA Live
NBA Live is a basketball video game series published by Electronic Arts. The first game in the series was released in November 1994. The series features NBA players and teams, and allows players to compete in various game modes. The series has seen many ups and downs, with the most recent entry being NBA Live 18, which was released in October 2017.
NBA Live 95
NBA Live 95 was the first installment in the NBA Live series and was released on November 10, 1994, for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. The game featured the then-new Charlotte Hornets as well as updated rosters for every other NBA team. Michael Jordan was featured on the cover. It was also the last game in the series to be released on a Nintendo console until NBA Live 2003. The SNES version of NBA Live 95 received positive reviews, with some critics calling it one of the best basketball games available at the time.
NBA Live 96
In 1995, EA released NBA Live 95, the first game in the NBA Live series. The game was well-received, and sold over a million copies. The success of NBA Live 95 led to the release of NBA Live 96 the following year. NBA Live 96 improved upon the formula established by its predecessor, with better graphics and gameplay. It was also the first game in the series to be released on multiple platforms, including the PlayStation and Sega Saturn.
NBA Live 96 was a critical and commercial success, selling over two million copies. The game’s success led to EA releasing an updated version of the game,NBA Live 96: Championship Edition, later in the year. The Championship Edition included updated rosters and enhanced graphics.
In 1997, EA released NBA Live 97, the third game in the series. NBA Live 97 built upon the foundations laid by its predecessors, with improved graphics and gameplay. The game also introduced new features, such as create-a-player and dynamic season modes. NBA Live 97 was another critical and commercial success for EA, selling over three million copies.
Following the release of NBA Live 97, EA experienced a decline in sales for the NBA Live series. This decline continued with the release of NBA Live 98 in 1998. NBA Live 98 was met with mixed reviews, and sales declined further. In an effort to reverse this trend, EA made a number of changes toNBA Live 99, which was released in 1999. These changes included an improved graphical engine and new features such as profile management for created players. Despite these changes, sales of NBA Live 99 failed to improve, leading to further decline in subsequent years.
NBA Live 97
NBA Live 97 was the fourth installment of the NBA Live video games series. The cover featured then-Portland Trail Blazers guard Clyde Drexler. This edition featured Barkley: Shut Up and Jam! for the first time as a bonus game. It also was the first in the series to be released on the Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation. On release, GameSpot said of the PlayStation version, “Basketball fans who want an arcade-style game with lots of action and little strategy will find NBA Live 97 to be a solid title”. They scored it 7.4 out of 10. Giving the Saturn version 3 out of 5 stars, GamePro commented that “live’s animations are superb--as good as or better than those in any other basketball game on any system.” They also praised the large number of teams, complaints they had with previous installments. However, they criticized the lack of create-a-player mode, two-on-two mode, and Licensed Team Dream Rosters (LDRs).
The Decline of NBA Live
NBA Live 08
In September of 2007, NBA Live 08 was released to poor reception and weak sales. It was the lowest rated game in the series since NBA Live 2000, and is widely considered one of the worst basketball games ever made. This was a serious problem for EA Sports, as the NBA Live franchise had been one of their premier titles for over a decade. They responded by making a number of changes to the development team, and by cutting their losses on NBA Live 09 (which was never released). This left many wondering if we would ever see another NBA Live game.
In the years since, EA Sports has released a number of basketball games under the NBA Elite and NBA Live brands. However, these games were not well received by fans or critics, and were quickly Cancelled. As a result, it appeared that the NBA Live franchise was dead.
However, in recent months there have been signs that EA Sports may be planning to revive the NBA Live franchise. In February of 2018, they registered a number of new trademarks related to the NBA Live name. This has led to speculation that we may see an announcement from EA Sports about a new NBA Live game in the near future.
NBA Live 09
After a strong start with NBA Live 06, the series hit a bit of a rough patch with NBA Live 07. The game was criticized for its poor graphics and animation, and it was clear that the series needed a refresh. NBA Live 08 was an attempt to do just that, but the game was still plagued by problems. It was around this time that the 2K series really began to take off, and NBA Live 2009 was seen as an important release for the series.
Unfortunately, NBA Live 09 was not up to the task. The game received poor reviews, with many critics citing its lack of innovation and poor graphics. This was seen as the beginning of the end for NBA Live, and the series has not been able to recover since then. There have been some attempts to revive the franchise, but so far nothing has been able to bring it back to its former glory.
NBA Live 10
2009’s NBA Live 10 was the last NBA Live game issued by EA Sports. In the years since, the company has EA Sports stopped developing the game. As a result, the last NBA Live game is also the most recent basketball video game released by EA Sports. Nevertheless, the question “is NBA Live coming back?” is one that gets asked a lot. The answer to that question isn’t entirely clear, but there are some things we do know.
In September of 2013, it was announced that NBA Elite 11 had been canceled. The next month, EA Sports issued a statement saying that they were “committed to making NBA Elite a great game” and would be working on it for release in 2010. However, no such game ended up releasing, and it was later revealed that development of NBA Elite 11 had been shifted to Tiburon, who would later develop NBA Live 14.
In May of 2014, Polygon published an article detailing Tiburon’s work on NBA Live 14. According to the article, development on the game had begun in 2012 asNBA Elite 13. The annual releases were subsequently canceled so that they could focus on making a good game rather than simply churning one out each year regardless of quality. However, due in part to tensions between Tiburon and EA Canada (the former EA Sports studio responsible for NBA Live), as well as other issues related to new technology and design direction, progress on NBA Live 14 wasn’t going as smoothly as planned.
As a result,EA eventually decided to cancelNBA Live 14 less than two months before its scheduled release date in October of 2013. It was a decision that no doubt disappointed many basketball gamers who had been looking forward to finally getting their hands on a new NBA Live game after four years without one. It also left the future of the franchise in question, which brings us back to our original question: is NBA Live coming back?
At this point in time, there has been no official word fromEA Sports about anotherNBA Live game being in development or even in consideration. In fact, sinceNBA Elite 11was canceled andNBA Live 14was put on hold indefinitely, there hasn’t been much talk about basketball games fromEA Sports at all. That silence has led some people to believe that we may have seen the last ofNBA Livesuperstarcover athletes like Kobe Bryant and LeBron James gracingthe cover art of new games in the series; however, nothing has been confirmed either way just yet.
So what does the future hold forNBA Liveseries? Well, at this point it’s impossible to say for sure what will happen withNBA Live 15and beyond. All we can really do is wait and see ifEA Sportsdecides to bring back this once great basketball gaming franchise or if they have decided to let it go for good this time around.
The Return of NBA Live
NBA Live was one of the most popular basketball video games of the early 2000s. It was released annually from 1998 to 2009, but then it disappeared from the shelves. Many fans assumed that NBA Live was gone for good. However, there have been recent rumours that the game might be making a comeback. Let’s take a look at what we know so far.
NBA Live 18
It’s been a long time coming, but NBA Live 18 is finally here! After a five year absence, the game is back and it’s bringing with it some much needed changes. First and foremost amongst those changes is the inclusion of a female player-creation option, which was notably absent from last year’s installment.
Other new additions this time around include a story mode called “The One” that follows your create-a-player character as they try to make it in the NBA, as well as an open-world streetball mode called “The Neighborhood”. The game also features an overhauled EA Sports Ultimate Team mode, which is arguably the most popular mode in any of EA’s sports games.
All in all, it seems like NBA Live 18 is shaping up to be a solid return for the franchise. Time will tell if it can truly compete with 2K’s NBA franchise, but for now fans of basketball gaming should definitely be excited.
NBA Live 19
In September of 2018, EA Sports announced that the long-awaited return of the NBA Live franchise would finally happen with the release of NBA Live 19. After a five year hiatus, the game looks to make a comeback with some new and innovative gameplay mechanics that should bring back some old fans while also attracting new ones.
So far, the early reception to NBA Live 19 has been positive, with many people praising the new modes and gameplay. Only time will tell if the game can find the success it once had, but for now, it looks like NBA Live is finally back on track.
NBA Live 20
EA Sports announced that NBA Live 20 will be released on September 6, 2019, for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game will feature Anthony Davis of the Los Angeles Lakers on the cover. It is the first entry in the NBA Live series since NBA Live 18, which was released in 2017.
