NFL Draft history
The NFL Draft is an annual event in which the teams of the National Football League (NFL) select players from college football. The draft is held every spring, typically in April. The draft consists of seven rounds, with each of the 32 NFL teams getting one pick in each round.
First NFL Draft
The first ever NFL Draft was held on February 8th, 1936. There were nine rounds and a total of ninety players were selected. This was just two days after the NFL had had its very first annual player-selection meeting, which would go on to be known as the NFL Draft. This first draft was held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Philadelphia and there were representatives from all thirteen NFL teams in attendance.
Interestingly, there was no live television coverage of this event and it wasn’t until 1951 that the NFL Draft would be televised for the first time. The first overall pick in this inaugural draft was Jay Berwanger, a running back from the University of Chicago. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles but he never actually played a game for them as he decided to pursue a career in business instead.
Most recent NFL Draft
The 2020 NFL Draft was the 85th annual meeting of National Football League (NFL) franchises to select newly eligible players. The draft was held on April 23–25, 2020 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The first round was held on April 23, followed by the second and third rounds on April 24, and concluded with rounds 4–7 on April 25. A record 37 underclassmen announced their intentions to forgo their remaining eligibility and declare for the draft. Clemson led all colleges with six first-round selections; this tied the record set by Miami in 2001 and again matched in 2019.
In the 2020 NFL Draft, a total of 254 players were selected over seven rounds by 32 NFL teams. Of these players, 27 were from outside of the United States; this draft tied with the 2019 NFL Draft for having the most non-US players ever selected in an NFL Draft. The University of Alabama had a record 11 players selected in the first round—eleven Alabama Crimson Tide players were chosen before any other school’s player—to surpass the previous record of ten first-round selections in a single draft set by Ohio State University in 2004 and Miami in 1999. LSU also set a new record with 14 total selections in through rounds 1–3; their previous best mark was 12 selections back in 2007. This gave Alabama and LSU a combined 25 selections through three rounds, tying Ohio State’s record set back in 2016.
