Ray Allen, one of the greatest shooters in NBA history, has announced his retirement from the league. The 41-year-old made the announcement on The Players’ Tribune, saying that “it is time for me to move on from playing this game.”

Allen spent 18 seasons in the NBA, playing for the Seattle SuperSonics, Milwaukee Bucks, Boston Celtics and Miami Heat. He was a 10-time All-Star and won two championships, one with each of the Celtics and Heat.

Allen is best known for his shooting ability; he is the NBA’s all-time leader in three-pointers made (2,973) and is one of only four players to make more than 2,000 threes in his career. He holds the record for most three-pointers made in a single season (269) and is one of only eight players to make more than 200 threes in a season multiple times.

Allen, who turns 43 next month, played 18 seasons in the NBA, winning two championships with the Boston Celtics and one with the Miami Heat. He was a 10-time All-Star and was named to the All-NBA team three times.

“I write this to you today as a 40-year old man who is retiring from the game,” Allen said in a post on The Players’ Tribune. “I write to you as a father of five children, including a son and daughter who are still in their formative years. And I write to you as somebody who is thankful for all of the support that you’ve given me throughout my career.”

Allen said he had “several conversations” with NBA teams about a return to the league this season, but ultimately decided that it was time to retire.

“It wasn’t an easy decision,” he said. “But after giving it some thought, I’m at peace with it.”

Allen finishes his career as the NBA’s all-time leader in 3-pointers made (2,973), and is fourth on the league’s all-time scoring list (24,505 points). He is also one of only four players in NBA history (Kobe Bryant, Karl Malone and LeBron James are the others) to win championships with three different teams.

In 2012, Allen left Boston as a free agent, signing with the Miami Heat. He helped them win an NBA Championship that year, beating his former team – the Celtics – in 7 games. The following year, he won his second straight championship with Miami, this time beating Tim Duncan’s San Antonio Spurs team in 7 games.

After his contract with Miami expired following the 2013-2014 season, Allen signed with back with his original team – the Milwaukee Bucks – on a 2-year deal. However, he only played 1 season for them before being waived in November of 2018. A few weeks later, he signed with Los Angeles.
