After all, The Rock is an actor now. He’s in movies and he’s on TV.
He’s not in WWE.
Introduction
Dwayne Johnson, also known by his ring name The Rock, is an American actor, producer, and semi-retired professional wrestler. He was a professional wrestler for the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) for eight years prior to pursuing an acting career. His films have grossed over $3.5 billion in North America and over $10.7 billion worldwide, making him one of the highest-grossing actors of all time.
The Rock’s Time in WWE
The Rock is one of the most popular wrestlers in WWE history. He was a champion wrestler and held the WWE Championship several times. He is also a movie star and has appeared in many films. The Rock was in WWE from 1996 to 2004 and then again in 2011. He is currently not in WWE.
The Rock’s First WWE Run
The Rock made his WWE debut in 1996 as Rocky Maivia, a third-generation wrestler whose father, High Chief Peter Maivia, and grandfather, “High Chief” Fanene Leifi Pita Maivia, were also wrestlers. After several months of tag team wrestling with fellow debutante!
The Rock began a singles career in early 1997 and won the WWE Intercontinental Championship in July. He quickly became one of the most popular stars in the company and was soon pushed as a main eventer. In October 1997, The Rock was involved in one of the most infamous backstage WWF brawls when he and Mankind fought each other in what was supposed to be a Ladder match for the vacant WWE Intercontinental Championship.
The Rock’s Second WWE Run
From 2002-2004, The Rock would make sporadic appearances in WWE. In early 2002, he feuded with Mr. McMahon after The Rock refused to put over Brock Lesnar. The two would have a match at WrestleMania X-8, which The Rock won.
In 2003, The Rock turned heel and joined the faction known as the nWo. He feuded with Stone Cold Steve Austin and also Bret Hart. At WrestleMania XIX, The Rock lost to Austin in what would be Austin’s retirement match.
The following year, The Rock would take part in the Royal Rumble match and went on to have a rematch with Austin at WrestleMania XX. This time, Austin was the one who came out victorious. After the match, the two men hugged it out in a show of respect.
The Rock’s Time Outside of WWE
It has been a while since we’ve seen The Rock in WWE. He was last seen at WrestleMania 32 in 2016, where he defeated Erick Rowan in six seconds. Outside of WWE, The Rock has been busy with his Hollywood career. He’s starred in movies such as Moana, Baywatch, and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. He’s also set to star in the upcoming Fast & Furious spinoff, Hobbs & Shaw. Let’s take a look at what The Rock has been up to outside of WWE.
The Rock’s Hollywood Career
Dwayne Johnson, also known by his ring name The Rock, is an American actor and producer. Born in California and raised in Hawaii, Johnson was a college football player for the University of Miami, where he won a national championship on the 1991 Miami Hurricanes team. After being cut from the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League (CFL), he began training as a professional wrestler. He was promoted to WWE’s main roster in 1996 and went on to win several championships, including the WWF/WWE Championship eight times and the WCW/World Championship twice.
The Rock’s Return to WWE
On April 1, 2013, The Rock made a surprise appearance on WWE Raw, making his first WWE appearance since February 14, 2003. He came out to the ring to Cut a promo on John Cena and teased a WrestleMania match with him. The next week, Cena returned the favor by coming out to the ring and calling out The Rock. After Cena left the ring, Rock’s music played, and he appeared on the Titantron. He said that he was happy to be back in WWE and that it was “The People’s Time”.
The following week, The Rock came out to the ring and said he wanted to have a match with John Cena at WrestleMania 29. Cena came out and said that he wanted to have a match with The Rock at WrestleMania 28 instead. After back-and-forth insults between the two men, Vickie Guerrero interrupted and said that she would make sure that the match happened at WrestleMania 28.
On November 26, 2012 (the day after Survivor Series), it was announced that The Rock would return to WWE Raw on January 7, 2013 (the first Raw of 2013).
