Johnson, who grew up in Columbia, Maryland, was a four-year starter at Maryland’s St. Frances Academy As a high schooler, she was named a McDonald’s All-American, WBCA All-American, and USA Today All-USA first teamer.
In her senior year of high school Johnson led St. Frances to a 32–1 record and the No. 1 ranking in the nation by USA Today. She was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year and the Naismith high school Player of the Year.
Johnson played college basketball at the University of Tennessee from 2006 to 2010. As a freshman, she was named SEC Freshman of the Year and helped lead Tennessee to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament In her sophomore year, Johnson helped lead Tennessee to a National Championship title. She was named to the NCAA All-Tournament team and second-team All-American by AP.
As a junior, Johnson was again named second-team All-American by AP and helped lead Tennessee to another Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament In her senior year, she was once again named to the NCAA All-Tournament team as she helped lead Tennessee to its third straight Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA tournament Johnson finished her collegiate career as Tennessee’s all-time leader in blocks with 296.
Johnson was drafted 2nd overall by the Seattle Storm in the 2010 NBA Draft She won a NBA Championship with Seattle in 2010. In 2012, she was traded to the Atlanta Dream where she helped lead them to the NBA Finals in 2013
