How to improve your shooting technique

Basketball is a contact sport that requires split-second decisions. Often, the difference between winning and losing comes down to which team can make the most shots. In order to make more shots, it is important to have good shooting technique

There are three main factors that affect shooting technique: grip, stance, and follow-through.

Grip: How you hold the ball will affect the direction and spin of the ball when you shoot it. For a right-handed player, place your right hand on the ball so that your fingers are spread evenly over the top of the ball. Place your left hand under the ball, and cup your left fingers around the front of the ball. For a left-handed player, reverse these instructions.

Stance: Your feet should be shoulder-width apart and squared to the basket; this will give you a strong base to shoot from. If you are right-handed, your right foot should be slightly forward; if you are left-handed, your left foot should be slightly forward. Bend your knees and keep your weight on the balls of your feet so that you can jump quickly if necessary.

Follow-through: As you release the ball snap your wrists so that your fingers point toward the basket just as the ball leaves your hands. Then extend your arms toward the basket and snap your wrists again at the moment of impact. This second snap will help ensure that the ball rotates correctly and has a good chance of going in.

The Basketball season is in Full Swing and the Lufkin Panthers are working hard to improve their game. Head Coach Clint Dedman has some tips for better ball handling.

“One of the most important things for a good basketball player is to have good ball handling skills,” Dedman said. “You can’t be a good player if you can’t handle the ball well.”

Dedman said that one of the best ways to improve ball-handling skills is to practice as much as possible.

“The more you practice, the better you’ll become at handling the ball,” he said. “You can also try different drills to help improve your skills.”

Here are some of Coach Dedman’s favorite ball-handling drills

1. The Circle Drill: Trace an imaginary circle with your dominant hand while dribbling a basketball inside of it. As you get better at this drill, increase the size of the circle.
2. The Figure Eight Drill: Dribble the ball around your legs in a figure eight pattern. As you get better at this drill, increase your speed.
3. The Over and Under Drill: Dribble the ball between your legs, then over your head, then back between your legs again. As you get better at this drill, increase your speed.
4. The Blindfolded Drill: This one is for advanced players only! Dribble the ball around cones while blindfolded (with a partner’s help) and see how long you can keep control of the ball.
