A baseball glove is an important piece of equipment for any player. Do you know the different parts of a glove? Check out this blog post to learn more!
The baseball glove – an overview
The baseball glove has come a long way since the game’s humble beginnings. In the early days of baseball, players simply wrapped their hand in a piece of leather to help them grip the ball. As the game evolved, so did the gloves.
Today, every player wears a glove, and there are different types of gloves for different positions on the field. Here’s a quick overview of the most common types of gloves worn in baseball:
First baseman’s mitt: This glove is extra-padded to help first basemen catch those hard-hit balls First basemen’s gloves typically have 12 inches in circumference and closed webs (the space between the thumb and forefinger) to keep balls from popping out.
Catcher’s mitt: Catcher’s mitts are larger than other gloves, with closed webs and extra padding to protect the hand from fastballs. Most catcher’s mitts have 32 inches in circumference – that’s about the size of a dinner plate!
Outfielder’s glove: Outfielders need gloves that are lightweight and easy to maneuver, so their gloves typically have open webs (to reduce weight) and smaller finger stalls (to increase dexterity).
The parts of a baseball glove
A baseball glove or mitt is a large leather glove worn by baseball players of the defending team which assists players in catching and fielding balls hit by a batter or thrown by a teammate. Gloves have separate sections for each finger and the thumb, and they come in various sizes to fit different hand sizes. Gloves are measured by their length in inches from the heel of the palm to the top of the index finger, called the “pattern size”, as well as by their width across the knuckles measured in inches, called “hand size”.
Gloves generally range in size from 11.5 to 13 inches for infielders, and 11.5 to 14 inches for outfielders. Outfielders’ gloves tend to be larger to assist with catching fly balls A smaller glove is sometimes used by shortstop Position players second basemen and third basemen when attempting to field bunts. An outfielder’s throwing hand also benefits from a smaller glove due to the need for more dexterity when attempting to make long throws.
The following parts of a baseball glove are shown in order from top (the wrist) to bottom (the plam):
-Webbing: The webbing connects the thumb and forefinger, forming a “pocket” where balls caught will reside.
-Welt: A welt is a strip of leather that runs around the circumference of the glove just below the webbing that adds both stability and rigidity to the glove.
-Cuff: The cuff is generally made of padded cotton or wool and extends up past the wrist for additional protection and support.
-Body: The body of the glove is usually constructed from cowhide leather and provides padding for both shock absorption and comfort.
-Lining: Most gloves have some form of lining on both the back (outside) and palm (inside) sides which helps wick away moisture while also providing additional warmth on cold days.
The webbing
The webbing of a baseball glove is the part that connects the thumb and the index finger. It is usually made of leather or synthetic materials The webbing helps the glove to keep its shape and also provides protection for the hand.
The backhand
The backhand is the part of the glove that, you guessed it, goes on the back of your hand. You’ll find the backhand on both catcher’s mitts and fielder’s gloves. It’s usually made from a different material than the palm, so it has a different color or pattern. The backhand also has extra padding to protect your hand from being hit by a ball.
The palm
The palm of the glove is the part of the glove that you use to catch the ball. It is usually made of leather or a synthetic material. The palm may have padding to help you grip the ball.
The thumb
The thumb is the part of the baseball glove that goes over the thumb of the player’s non-throwing hand. It is generally made of leather or a synthetic material, and is padded to protect the thumb from being hit by a ball.
The little finger
The little finger on a baseball glove is usually the shortest finger, and it’s positioned at the bottom of the glove. This finger helps give the glove its shape and helps provide support for the other fingers.
The pinky
The pinky is the smallest finger on the hand, and it is also the shortest finger on a baseball glove This finger is responsible for gripping the ball, and it helps to keep the ball in the palm of the hand. The pinky is typically made of leather, and it is sewn into the glove at the base.
The lacing
The lacing is the part of the glove that goes around the circumference of the glove and ties it together. It is generally made of leather, but can also be made of nylon or other materials. The lacing on a baseball glove can be any color, but is most commonly black or white.
The break-in process
baseball gloves like all gloves, take time to break in. The break-in process helps the glove to become more pliable and fit your hand better. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when breaking in your glove. The process can be as simple as working the leather with your hands or using a ball to loosen up the leather. The amount of time it takes to break in a glove varies, but it’s usually between one and two weeks.
