The History of SDIA Hockey

Since its inception in 1993, the Street Dawgz Inline Association (SDIA) has been at the forefront of developing and promoting inline hockey in Southern California From its early days as a loose-knit group of friends skating at local parks and parking lots, to its present status as one of the largest and most successful inline hockey leagues in the world, SDIA has always been about one thing – fostering a love for the game of inline hockey

The history of SDIA hockey is intimately intertwined with the history of inline skating itself. Inline skating was invented in 1760 by John Joseph Merlin, a Belgian clockmaker who wanted to find a way to roller skate indoors without damaging his floors. He attached small metal wheels to his shoes and initially found success – until he crashed into a mirror at high speed and suffered a serious injury. Inline skating remained an obscure curiosity for nearly 200 years until it was popularized in the 1980s by Rollerblade, Inc., which introduced the first mass-produced inline skates.

Inline skating quickly caught on as a popular recreational activity and soon people were looking for ways to play organized games on inline skates. The first organizedinline hockey game was played in 1883 between two teams of five players each on an outdoorroller rink in Brooklyn, New York. It wasn’t until the late 1980s Line Hockey began to gain traction as a competitive sport, however.

In 1989, Mike McCabe – one of the founders of SDIA – organized the Street Hockey tournament in California. The tournament was held in CostaMesa and featured 12 teams from across Southern California By allaccounts, it was a rousing success, and it laid the groundwork for whatwould become SDIA Hockey.

In 1993, McCabe founded SDIA Hockey with the help of fellow Hockey Enthusiasts Tony Cimoli and Rene Tanguay. The young league didneginner level play with just four teams, but it rapidly grew in popularityand expanded to include intermediate and advanced levels of play withinits first few years. Today, SDIA Hockey is widely considered to be oneof the Inline hockey leaguesin North America with over 60 teams across all levelsof play competing each season.
