Starlin Castro (born March 6, 1992) is a Dominican professional baseball infielder for the Miami Marlins of Major League Baseball (MLB). He made his MLB debut with the Chicago Cubs in 2010, and was traded to the New York Yankees in 2015.

Castro is a three-time MLB All-Star and won the National League Silver Slugger Award at shortstop in 2012. He has also played second base and third base.

Early Life and Amateur Career

Born in Montijo, province of Badajoz, Extremadura, Castro signed with the Chicago Cubs as an international free agent in 2006. He was considered one of the top prospects in baseball from 2009 through 2011.

Prior to signing, Castro was ranked as the top international prospect by Baseball America He had previously been linked to the Baltimore Orioles Los Angeles Dodgers and Cleveland Indians but ultimately chose to sign with the Cubs. signing bonuses for Cuban prospects had been capped at $2.9 million under Major League Baseball’s Collective Bargaining Agreement with its players union, but because he was under 23 and had not played professionally in Cuba, he was eligible to receive a signing bonus greater than that amount. The Cubs gave him a reported signing bonus of $6.0 million.

Professional Career

Starlin Castro signed a minor league contract with the New York Yankees in 2019. He was invited to spring training and made the Opening Day roster. On opening day he had two hits, including a homer, and three RBIs in a win against the Baltimore Orioles
