He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Philadelphia Quakers / Phillies from 1883 to 1889 as a first baseman and outfielder. Kinsella was 6 feet (1.8 m) tall, weighed 190 pounds (86 kg), and threw and batted right-handed.

Kinsella began his professional baseball career in 1880 with the Reading Actives of the Pennsylvania State Association. He played for the Actives through 1882, then joined the Philadelphia Quakers in 1883. In his seven-season MLB career, he compiled a .279 batting average with 779 hits, 97 doubles, 23 triples, 10 home runs, 368 RBIs, 202 stolen bases, 404 runs scored, and 541 total bases in 968 games played. His stolen base total was second all-time to Billy Hamilton’s 458 when he retired and still ranks 21st all-time as of 2018. He also ranks sixth all-time among Phillies players in triples (23), seventh all-time in stolen bases (202), and 10th all-time in at bats per home run (487.5).

Kinsella was one of four players inducted into the inaugural class of the Philadelphia Baseball Wall of Fame on April 10, 2013. The others were Travis Jackson, Jimmie Foxx, and Roy Halladay.
