Since its founding in 1884, West Chester baseball has been a proud tradition of excellence. The Early Years teams were no exception, winning the first ever pennant in franchise history in 1890. From there, the team would go on to win 5 more pennants in the next 10 years.

The early years were defined by great hitting and strong pitching. Hall of Famer Goose Goslin batted .324 with West Chester while pitchers such as Lefty Grove and Bullet Joe Bush won a combined 7 Cy Young Awards during their time with the team.

The golden era is considered by many to be the most successful period in the history of the West Chester baseball program From 1950 to 1967, the team won 12 conference championships and made 14 appearances in the NCAA tournament Players like Mike Schmidt Steve Carlton, and Robin Roberts became legends, and the team’s accomplishments are still remembered fondly by fans today.

The Modern Era

The 1950s saw the arrival of a number of fine young ballplayers who would form the core of the teams of the modern ERA These included outfielders Jimmy Stephens and Billy Hess, first baseman Mike Minnaugh, and pitchers Vern Benson, Bill Conroy, and Russ Van Atta. Catcher Bob Rommel came on board in 1957. The biggest names in baseball came to West Chester to play exhibition games against our local nine, including Jackie Robinson Stan Musial Yogi Berra Duke Snider Richie Ashburn, Warren Spahn Bob Feller Brooks Robinson and Johnny Bench Thousands turned out to watch these contests.

The Rivalries

The first recorded baseball game in West Chester took place in 1858 between the West Chester and Nether Providence Clubs. The teams played three matches that year, with West Chester winning two out of three. These two clubs continued their rivalry for the next few years, playing each other at least once a season. In 1862, the West Chester Club challenged the Philadelphia Athletic Club to a match, which Philly won handily by a score of 41 to 13.

The first real organized baseball league in West Chester was formed in 1864, with four teams: the Liberty Bells, Eclipse, Olympics, and Keystone. The Liberty Bells quickly became the dominant team in the league, winning nine championships in eleven years. They were led by star pitcher John Huntzinger, who went on to play professional baseball for the Philadelphia Quakers (now the Phillies).

The borough’s first professional baseball team was formed in 1884 as part of the Pennsylvania State Association. The team was known as the West Chester Localities and played their home games at Athletic Park. The team only lasted one season before folding due to financial difficulties.
