NBA Youngboy’s Charges
On September 28, 2016, NBA Youngboy was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder. The charges stem from a drive-by shooting that took place in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on November 3, 2016.
NBA Youngboy has been in and out of jail since he was first arrested in October 2016. He was released on bond in December 2016, but was re-arrested in February 2017 for violating the conditions of his release. He was released again in March 2017, but was arrested yet again in May 2017 for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend.
As of June 2017, NBA Youngboy is once again behind bars, this time charged with attempted second-degree murder stemming from a shooting that occurred outside a Miami hotel in May 2017.
The Crime
NBA Youngboy, real name Kentrell Gaulden, was arrested on drug and gun charges in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Monday night (October 26).
The 20-year-old rapper, who hails from the city, was stopped by police while driving a car with two other people. A search of the vehicle revealed guns and drugs, and all three occupants were taken into custody.
Gaulden has been charged with possession of a Schedule II drug (codeine), possession of a Schedule I drug (marijuana) and illegal carrying of a weapon in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance. He is currently being held on $75,000 bond.
If convicted on all charges, Gaulden faces up to 30 years in prison. His next court appearance is scheduled for November 9.
The Trial
On October 20, 2016, NBA Youngboy was arrested and charged with attempted first degree murder of a taxicab driver in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The driver was shot four times and Youngboy allegedly stole the victim’s money and possessions. He plead not guilty to the charges on November 7, 2016.
In December 2016, he was released on $75,000 bail and placed on house arrest with an ankle monitor. NBA Youngboy was indicted by a grand jury on February 22, 2017 on three counts of attempted first degree murder and one count of armed robbery with a firearm.
On March 23, 2017, he pled guilty to a reduced charge of aggravated assault with a firearm and was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with credit for time served. He was also required to pay $1,654 in restitution to the victim. However, he was released on probation on June 6, 2017.
If he violates the terms of his probation, NBA Youngboy will have to serve out his 10 year sentence.
The Sentence
NBA Youngboy, born Kentrell DeSean Gaulden, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on April 27, 2020 after pleading guilty to a drive-by shooting that occurred in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 2016. The shooting left one person injured.
The 20-year-old rapper was initially facing a possible sentence of life in prison but reached a plea deal with prosecutors. As part of the plea deal, NBA Youngboy will serve 10 years in prison followed by three years of probation.
During his probationary period, NBA Youngboy will be required to complete 300 hours of community service and will be forbidden from having any contact with the victim or the victim’s family. He will also be required to pay $10,000 in restitution to the victim.
The Aftermath
On October 9, 2016, NBA Youngboy was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted first degree murder. The charges stem from a drive-by shooting that occurred on February 25, 2016 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. NBA Youngboy allegedly shot two men, one of whom was critically injured. He was also charged with possession of a firearm by a felon. If convicted, he faces up to 50 years in prison.
On November 16, 2017, NBA Youngboy pleaded guilty to one count of attempted second degree murder. Under the terms of the plea deal, he will serve 10 years in prison with credit for time served. He will be eligible for parole after five years. The other charges were dropped as part of the plea deal.
