Eastern Conference

The Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA) is one of two conferences that makes up the league, the other being the Western Conference. The Eastern Conference consists of 15 teams, organized in three divisions.

Atlantic Division

The Atlantic Division is one of the six divisions in the NBA. It comprises teams from the Northeast and mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. The division was created prior to the 1970-71 season, when the NBA realigned its teams into two conferences with two divisions each.

The Atlantic Division currently has five teams: the Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, New York Knicks, Philadelphia 76ers, and Toronto Raptors. The division has been represented in the NBA Finals by all five of its teams.

Central Division

The Central Division of the National Basketball Association (NBA) is one of three divisions in the Eastern Conference of the NBA. The Central Division consists of five teams: the Chicago Bulls, the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Detroit Pistons, the Indiana Pacers, and the Milwaukee Bucks.

Southeast Division

The Southeast Division of the National Basketball Association (NBA) is one of the six divisions of the Eastern Conference. The division consists of five teams, all located in the southeastern United States: the Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets, Miami Heat, Orlando Magic and Washington Wizards. Although it currently has only five teams, the Southeast has been as large as eight teams (with the expansion Charlotte Bobcats and brief existence of the now-defunct Kansas City/Sacramento Kings franchise), and as small as four (without any Charlotte-based teams).

The division was created at the start of the 2004–05 NBA season, when the Charlotte Bobcats expansion franchise joined the league. At that time, three of its four members were holdovers from the former Central Division of NBA’s Eastern Conference: the Hawks, Heat and Magic. The Wizards were previously members of the Atlantic Division; they joined Southeast when their home arena changed hands and they relocated from Landover, Maryland to Washington, D.C. in 1997. The Hornets began play as an expansion team in 1988 as members of the East’s former Central Division; they spent 19 seasons in that division before being realigned to Southwest in 2007. When Charlotte rejoined Southeast in 2014 after spending seven seasons in Northwest, all five southeastern U.S. states were represented in Southeast for first time since 2005–06 season.

Since its inception, winning a division title has been considered somewhat easier for teams from Southeast than for those from other divisions; no team outside Southeast has ever won more games or had a higher winning percentage than any Southeast team did over any 82-game season (2004–05 to present). As a result, only two non-Southeast teams have ever reached 60 wins or won an NBA title while playing their home games within U.S.’s southeast region: Chicago Bulls (in both cases while playing their home games at United Center) and Oklahoma City Thunder (as Sonic before 2008 move toOKC).

Western Conference

The Western Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA) is one of two conferences that makes up the league, the other being the Eastern Conference. The Western Conference consists of 15 teams, organized into three divisions of five teams each.

Southwest Division

The Southwest Division is one of the six divisions in the Western Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The division comprises five teams located in the South Central United States: Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets, Memphis Grizzlies, New Orleans Pelicans and San Antonio Spurs.

The Southwest Division was formed in 2004 as part of the NBA’s realignment plan that saw the league’s 30 teams split into six divisions of five teams each. Prior to the realignment, the Mavericks, Rockets, Grizzlies and Spurs were members of the former Midwest Division. The Pelicans were added to the division as an expansion team in 2002.

The Southwest Division has been one of the most competitive and evenly-matched divisions in the NBA since its inception. The Mavericks are the only team to have won an NBA Championship (2011), while all other teams have at least qualified for the playoffs multiple times. In addition, all five teams have won at least one division title since 2004.

Northwest Division

The Northwest Division is one of the NBA’s six divisions. The division was created at the start of the 2004-05 season, when the league realigned its 30 teams into six divisions of five teams each. It is also one of three divisions in the Western Conference.

The division consists of five teams: the Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Oklahoma City Thunder, Portland Trail Blazers, and Utah Jazz. All five teams are based in the western United States.

The division has been dominated by the Thunder since its creation. Oklahoma City has won the division title nine times, including eight consecutive seasons from 2010-11 to 2017-18. The only other team to win the division title is the Trail Blazers, who did so in 2013-14.

The Northwest Division has been home to some of the NBA’s most iconic players and teams. The Jazz were one of the league’s most dominant teams in the 1990s, led by Hall of Famers Karl Malone and John Stockton. Malone won two MVP titles and Stockton is the NBA’s all-time leader in assists while playing for Utah.

More recently, players such as Russell Westbrook, Kevin Durant, and James Harden have all made their mark on the division while playing for Oklahoma City. All three have won MVP titles and have been named to numerous All-Star teams.

Pacific Division

The Pacific Division is one of the six divisions in the Western Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). It consists of five teams from the westernmost states of the United States: the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Phoenix Suns, and Sacramento Kings.
