Atlantic Division

The Atlantic Division is one of the three divisions in the Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). It consists of five teams located in the northeastern United States and Canada. The division winner is guaranteed a top-three seed in the NBA playoffs.

The division was created at the start of the 1970–71 season, when the NBA’s expansion into Canada resulted in the creation of two new divisions, the other being its counterpart, the Central Division. The NBA realigned itself into two conferences, as it expanded to an even number of teams overall. As a result, both conferences would have an equal number of teams.

The Boston Celtics, who currently have the most Atlantic Division championships with 18, have also won the most Eastern Conference championships with 21. The New York Knicks are second overall with 13 conference titles.

As of the 2020-2021 season, the current divisional alignment has existed since 2004, when the conference underwent changes that saw the addition of the Southwest Division.

Southwest Division

The Southwest Division is a division of the Western Conference in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Southwest Division began play at the start of the 2004–05 NBA season. The division consists of five teams, Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets, Memphis Grizzlies, New Orleans Pelicans and San Antonio Spurs.

From 2004 to 2013, the Southwest Division had the best record in the Western Conference. In those ten seasons, its teams compiled a combined record of 1,131 wins and 899 losses (.559). Three of its teams (Houston in 2005 and 2007–08, Dallas in 2006–07) reached the NBA Finals during that span. They also sent at least one team to the conference finals each year except 2010. Every team in the division made the playoffs during this timespan except for two (Memphis in 2005 and New Orleans from 2008 to 2012).

Northwest Division

The Northwest Division is one of the three divisions in the Western Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). It consists of five teams: the Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Oklahoma City Thunder, Portland Trail Blazers and Utah Jazz.

The division was created at the start of the 2004-05 season, when the NBA realigned its divisions in order to balance them out following the addition of the expansion Charlotte Bobcats. At that time, the New Orleans Pelicans were in the West but not in any particular division.

The Northwest Division has been dominated by the Jazz and Nuggets, who between them have won every division title since 2004-05. The Jazz have been particularly successful, winning six titles in a row between 2007-08 and 2012-13.

Pacific Division

The Pacific Division is one of the three divisions in the Western Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The division consists of five teams: the Golden State Warriors, the Los Angeles Clippers, the Los Angeles Lakers, the Phoenix Suns, and the Sacramento Kings.
