The NBA All-Star Game is one of the biggest events on the basketball calendar, and this year’s edition is sure to be a thrilling one. But before the game tips off, there’s one burning question on everyone’s mind: what are the teams?
Here’s a look at the rosters for the 2019 NBA All-Star Game.
Eastern Conference All-Star Team
The Eastern Conference All-Star team is composed of 12 players that are voted in by the public, 2 players that are chosen by the head coach, and 1 player that is chosen by the commissioner. Out of the 12 players that are voted in, there are 3 frontcourt players and 2 backcourt players. The starters for the Eastern Conference All-Star team are Kyrie Irving (Cavaliers), DeMar DeRozan (Raptors), LeBron James (Cavaliers), Giannis Antetokounmpo (Bucks), and Jimmy Butler (Bulls). The reserves are Kevin Love (Cavaliers), Isaiah Thomas (Celtics), Paul George (Pacers), Kemba Walker (Hornets), John Wall (Wizards), Kyle Lowry (Raptors), and Bradley Beal (Wizards).
Kyrie Irving
Kyrie Andrew Irving is an American professional basketball player for the Brooklyn Nets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was named NBA Rookie of the Year after being selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the first overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft. A six-time NBA All-Star, Irving was named to the All-NBA Third Team in 2015. He won an NBA championship with the Cavaliers in 2016.
DeMar DeRozan
DeMar Darnell DeRozan (born August 7, 1989) is an American professional basketball player for the Toronto Raptors of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the USC Trojans and was selected ninth overall by the Raptors in the 2009 NBA draft. He is a four-time NBA All-Star and a two-time All-NBA Team member.
In his nine seasons with the Raptors, DeRozan became the franchise’s all-time leading scorer. He was also named to the NBA All-Rookie Team in 2010. He helped lead Toronto to five consecutive playoff appearances between 2014 and 2018, including four Atlantic Division championships. In 2018, he was traded to the San Antonio Spurs in a package deal involving Kawhi Leonard.
Jimmy Butler
Jimmy Butler is an American professional basketball player for the Miami Heat of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Born in Houston, Texas, Butler grew up in Tomball, where he played high school basketball for Tomball Memorial High School. He played college basketball for Tyler Junior College and Marquette University before being drafted with the 30th overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft by the Chicago Bulls.
Giannis Antetokounmpo
Giannis Antetokounmpo was born in Greece to Nigerian parents. He is the Bucks’ leading scorer and rebounder, and is also their primary ball handler and playmaker. He is one of the most versatile players in the league, and has been named an All-Star starter for the Eastern Conference All-Star team.
Joel Embiid
Joel Hans Embiid is a Cameroonian professional basketball player for the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). After one year of college basketball with the Kansas Jayhawks, he was drafted with the third overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft by the 76ers.
He plays the center position and is 2.13 m (7 ft 0 in) tall and weighs 113 kg (250 lb).
During his first two seasons, Embiid suffered from multiple foot injuries that delayed his debut until 2016. In his rookie season, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. He subsequently made the NBA All-Star Game and All-NBA Second Team in 2018. That same year, he led the 76ers to their first playoff appearance since 2012 and their first Eastern Conference playoff berth since 2010. He has been nicknamed “The Process”.
Western Conference All-Star Team
The Western Conference All-Star team is comprised of some of the best players from the NBA. The team is filled with players who can score, defend, and rebound. Some of the players on the team include LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Anthony Davis. The team is coached by Steve Kerr.
Stephen Curry
Stephen Curry was born on March 14, 1988, in Akron, Ohio, to Dell and Sonya Curry. He is the oldest of three children. His younger brother Seth also plays in the NBA, and his sister Sydel is a volleyball player. Curry played college basketball at Davidson College from 2006 to 2009. In his junior year, he set the NCAA single-season record for three-pointers made.
Curry was selected by the Golden State Warriors with the seventh overall pick in the 2009 NBA draft. He won his first NBA championship with the Warriors in 2015, and was named the NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) that same year. He has been voted an All-Star six times and has won three NBA titles with the Warriors.
In 2016, Curry became the first player in NBA history to be unanimously voted MVP by all of the league’s voters. He has also set numerous other NBA records, including most points scored in a single season by a player from outside of North America (3,146).
James Harden
James Harden is an American professional basketball player for the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for Arizona State, where he was named a consensus All-American and Pac-10 Player of the Year in 2009. Harden was selected with the third overall pick in the 2009 NBA draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder.
In 2012, he was named NBA Sixth Man of the Year with the Thunder. He was traded to Houston before the start of the 2012–13 season. In 2015, 2016 and 2017, he was named an NBA All-Star and won back-to-back Michael Jordan MVP Awards while also leading the Rockets to the 2015 Western Conference Finals.
Kevin Durant
Kevin Durant was born on September 29, 1988, in Washington D.C. He is an American professional basketball player for the Brooklyn Nets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Durant has won many awards throughout his career including an NBA Championship, an NBA Finals MVP, two Olympic Gold Medals, and four NBA scoring titles. He has also been selected to nine NBA All-Star teams and eight All-NBA teams.
Anthony Davis
Anthony Davis, who plays for the Los Angeles Lakers, was the captain of the Western Conference All-Star team. He is a nine-time All-Star and was the All-Star MVP in 2017.
DeMarcus Cousins
DeMarcus Cousins is an American professional basketball player for the Sacramento Kings of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the Kentucky Wildcats, where he was named an All-American in 2010. He was selected with the fifth overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft by the Sacramento Kings, and became one of the youngest players in NBA history to record a double-double. In his first season, Cousins was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. He has earned two NBA All-Star selections and is a four-time member of the USA Basketball team, winning gold medals at both the 2014 FIBA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics.
