What Are The Worst NBA Teams?
The NBA is a league full of parity. There are really only a handful of teams that can compete for a championship each year, and even then, it’s often up to luck as to who will actually win it all. That said, there are also a number of teams who are just flat-out bad. Here are the worst NBA teams right now.
Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cleveland Cavaliers are one of the worst NBA teams. They have a record of 19-63 and are currently in last place in the Eastern Conference. The Cavaliers have been plagued by injuries, poor play, and bad luck. They have the worst record in the NBA and are looking like they will be the worst team for the foreseeable future.
Lack of star power
The Cleveland Cavaliers are currently the worst team in the NBA. They have a record of 11-42, and they are on pace to finish with the worst record in the league. They lack any star power, and their best player is Kevin Love, who is averaging 17.6 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. The Cavaliers are a young team, and they are rebuilding, but they are not expected to be competitive anytime soon.
Inexperienced roster
The 2020-21 Cleveland Cavaliers have the youngest roster in the NBA, and it includes nine players who are 23 or younger. Second-year guard Collin Sexton is the team’s leading scorer at 22.4 points per game, and Darius Garland, last year’s No. 5 overall pick, is second at 17.2 points per game. Other key contributors include Kevin Love, Larry Nance Jr., Cedi Osman, Andre Drummond and Rookie of the Year candidate Isaac Okoro.
Poor coaching
Since the 2016 NBA Finals, the Cavaliers have been in a bit of disarray. First, they lost to the Golden State Warriors in an epic collapse, then superstar LeBron James left for the Lakers in free agency. After that, the team hired John Beilein, a celebrated college coach, to lead them back to glory. But Beilein lasted just 54 games before resigning amid rumors of player revolts and a losing record.
This is just the latest example of poor coaching for the Cavaliers. They’ve lacked a consistent voice since James left in 2010, and it’s showed on the court. In the nine seasons since James left, the Cavaliers have only made the playoffs three times and have never made it past the second round.
Part of the problem is that the Cavaliers have been trying to rebuild on the fly. After James left in 2010, they tried to stay competitive by bringing in veterans like Shaquille O’Neal and Antawn Jamison. But that strategy backfired, and they ended up bottoming out with a record of 19-63 in 2013-14.
It’s clear that the Cavaliers need to start from scratch. They need to find a young coach who can connect with their players and develop a long-term plan for success. Otherwise, they’ll continue to be one of the worst teams in the NBA.
Phoenix Suns
Of all the teams in the NBA, the Phoenix Suns are by far the worst. The Suns have a record of (4-24), which is the worst in the league. They have lost 14 games in a row, and they show no signs of turning things around anytime soon.
Lack of star power
In the NBA, a team is often only as good as its best player. The Phoenix Suns are a perfect example of this. The Suns have had a number of very good players over the years, but they have never had a true superstar. This has led to a lack of success for the Suns, who have never won an NBA Championship.
The Suns do have some decent young players, but they will need to develop into superstars if the team is ever going to compete for a Championship. Until that happens, the Suns are likely to remain one of the worst teams in the NBA.
Inexperienced roster
The Suns have been in rebuilding mode for a few years now, and it shows in their inexperienced roster. With an average age of just over 24, they are the fifth-youngest team in the league. They don’t have a single player on their roster who has been to an NBA Finals.
This youthfulness has resulted in some inconsistency on the court. The Suns have had some big wins this season, including a win over the defending champion Golden State Warriors. But they’ve also had some bad losses, including a 46-point drubbing at the hands of the Philadelphia 76ers.
Poor coaching
In recent years, the Phoenix Suns have been one of the worst teams in the NBA. A big reason for this is their poor coaching. They have had 4 coaches in the last 5 years and none of them have been able to put together a winning team. Another reason for their struggles is that they have not been able to draft well. They have missed on a lot of their first round picks and they have not been able to find any young players to build around.
Sacramento Kings
Lack of star power
The Sacramento Kings are one of the worst teams in the NBA. They lack star power and have a below average roster. They are also one of the least popular teams in the league, which doesn’t help their bottom line. The Kings are currently in rebuilding mode and it will be a few years before they are competitive again.
Inexperienced roster
The Sacramento Kings are an American professional basketball team based in Sacramento, California. The Kings compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Western Conference’s Pacific Division. The Kings are the only team in the major professional North American sports leagues located in Sacramento. The team plays its home games at the Golden 1 Center.
The franchise began with the Rochester Royals, who set several league records during their time in Rochester, New York. They jumped to the upstart Basketball Association of America, where they won that league’s championship in 1945. The Royals defected to the NBA along with three other ABAs teams when it was formed in 1949. They became known as the Cincinnati Royals during their time as a member NBA Western Division from 1957 through 1972. When there was no chance for a playoff berth, management decided to move them to Kansas City-Omaha, Nebraska from 1972 through 1975 where they were renamed simply as “the Omaha Kings”. They were renamed once again as “the Kansas City Kings” from 1976 until 1985, and finally back “the Sacramento Kings” since 1986 for good.
In spite of winning only three playoff series since relocating to California, the team has enjoyed several successful seasons due largely to strong fan support from an increasingly loyal and dedicated fan base that extends far beyond Northern California which continues to believe that “this is finally our year.” In 2014–15, for instance, despite having one of their worst seasons ever by only winning 28 out of 82 games for a hideous .341 win percentage that placed them last in their division and second worst in their conference behind only the hapless New York Knicks who finished with an atrociously putrid .315 win percentage that same season; attendance at Golden 1 Center still averaged 101% capacity including 10 straight sellouts at one point which was a first in franchise history despite their on-court futility mainly because Kings fans had been so encouraged by management’s decision three months prior to that calamitous 2014–15 season to finally rid themselves of mercurial head coach Michael Malone who had failed miserably after two years on the job leading them to an utterly embarrassing record of 23 wins and 59 losses for a paltry .280 win percentage following two previous seasons under head coach Keith Smart where they had gone 28-54 (.341) and 25-57 (.305) respectively; and instead replaced him with respected veteran head coach George Karl who despite his past success elsewhere had never won an NBA championship which is really all that matters because rings are what counts most in this business as John Wooden famously said: “Be more concerned with your character than your reputation because your character is what you really are while your reputation is merely what others think you are.”
Despite those empty seats at Golden 1 Center recently due largely to their rebuilding process over these past few seasons; make no mistake about it friends; those seats will quickly be filled up again real soon now that they have finally turned things around again under new head coach Luke Walton following yet another rebuild under general manager Montgomery Vlade Divac which has seen them shed all those bad contracts from yesteryear while stocking up on quality young talent and future draft picks via trades along with some key free agent signings; resulting in them becoming one of League’s most improved teams this season as evidenced by their much improved 34-28 record heading into today’s game against those same cross-state rival Los Angeles Lakers whom they have beaten handily both times they have played each other so far this season by scores of 129-113 on November 8th at home and by an even more lopsided 118-106 margin on December 27th on the road; giving them high hopes & expectations of not just making playoffs this year but actually winning a playoff series or two for first time since 2006 when they made it all way to Western Conference Semifinals before losing hard fought seven game series against eventual NBA champion San Antonio Spurs whom they had taken 3 games to 2 lead against before losing final two games.
Poor coaching
One of the major reasons the Kings have been one of the worst teams in the NBA for so long is poor coaching.
Since their last playoff appearance in 2006, the Kings have had 9 different head coaches. That lack of stability has certainly contributed to the team’s lack of success.
It’s hard to build a winning culture when you’re constantly changing coaches and implementing new systems. The Kings have struggled to find an identity in recent years, and that can be traced back to their coaching carousel.
Atlanta Hawks
The Atlanta Hawks are one of the worst teams in the NBA. They have a record of 21-51 and are currently in last place in the Eastern Conference. The Hawks are a young team, but they have not been able to put it all together. Their best player is probably Trae Young, but he has not been enough to carry the team.
Lack of star power
The Atlanta Hawks are one of the worst teams in the NBA. They lack star power and are not very competitive. They have a lot of young players who are still developing, but they are not ready to compete for a playoff spot yet. The Hawks are rebuild mode and will likely be stuck near the bottom of the standings for the foreseeable future.
Inexperienced roster
The Hawks have an inexperienced roster, with only three players who have been in the NBA for more than five years. This lack of experience has lead to some inconsistencies on the court, and the team has not been able to put together a string of wins.
Poor coaching
It’s been said that the NBA is a players’ league. The best players usually end up on the best teams, and the worst players usually end up on the worst teams. But that doesn’t mean that coaching isn’t important in the NBA. Coaching can make a good team great, and it can make a bad team worse.
The Atlanta Hawks are a perfect example of a team that has been handicapped by poor coaching. The Hawks have had some good players over the years, but they’ve never been able to put it all together and become a great team. Part of the blame has to go to the coaches who have failed to get the most out of the Hawks’ talent.
Mike Budenholzer is the latest coach to try to turn things around in Atlanta, and he may be the one who finally succeeds. But until Budenholzer or another coach can figure out how to get the Hawks over the hump, they will continue to be one of the NBA’s worst teams.
Chicago Bulls
Lack of star power
The Chicago Bulls are currently in rebuilding mode and lack the star power that they once had. In recent years, they have been relying on young players to try and rebuild their franchise. Unfortunately, these young players have not been able to lead the team to success and the Bulls have struggled. They currently have one of the worst records in the NBA and are not expected to compete for a playoff spot this season.
Inexperienced roster
The Chicago Bulls are one of the worst NBA teams. They have an inexperienced roster, and they’ve been struggling to win games.
Poor coaching
One of the main reasons the Chicago Bulls are one of the worst NBA teams is because of their poor coaching. They have had 8 different coaches since the 2000-2001 season, and none of them have been able to bring the team back to its former glory. This constant changing of coaches has led to a lack of stability and direction for the team, and it has shown in their results on the court.
