Jeter’s group won the bidding for the Miami Marlins
Former New York Yankees star Derek Jeter’s group has won the bidding for the Miami Marlins, according to a report.
The Miami Herald, citing two sources familiar with the situation, reported Friday that Jeter’s group beat out a bid by Quogue Capital, a New York-based hedge fund.
The newspaper said the deal is not final and still needs to be approved by three-quarters of Major League Baseball’s owners. A vote could come as early as next week, the report said.
Jeter’s group includes Bruce Sherman, who would be the controlling owner, and Florida businessman Jorge Mas. Sherman is a part-owner of the Naples-based private equity firm Pritzker Group.
The Marlins have been up for sale since last year when owner Jeffrey Loria agreed to sell the team for $1.2 billion to a group that included Joshua Kushner, brother of presidential adviser Jared Kushner. That deal fell through in September amid financing difficulties.
Jeter is the new CEO and part-owner of the team
The Miami Marlins are an American professional baseball team based in Miami, Florida. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) East division. Their home park is Marlins Park. though they have also played at Dolphin Stadium from 1993 to 2011.
The Marlins began play as an expansion team in the 1993 Major League Baseball season and since then have fielded a competitive team, winning two World Series championships in 1997 and 2003. However, after a decade-long decline following their second World Series victory and the sale of the team by then-owner H. Wayne Huizenga to Jeffrey Loria in 2002, the Marlins have struggled to post winning records or make playoff appearances; they failed to do so from 2006 through 2016, their longest such streak in franchise history (a year longer than their previous record drought, which spanned 1998–2005).
Loria sold the Marlins to a group led by Bruce Sherman on October 2, 2017 for $1.2 billion; Derek Jeter, who had fronted a previous bid for the team with additional investors including Jeb Bush which had been rejected by Loria earlier in 2017, became CEO and part-owner of the Marlins.
Jeter’s group paid $1.2 billion for the team
A group led by New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter has officially closed on its purchase of the Miami Marlins.
The sale, first reported last August, was approved unanimously by Major League Baseball’s ownership on October 3. Jeter’s group paid $1.2 billion for the team, and Bruce Sherman, a minority partner in the group, will be the new controlling owner.
Jeter, who retired from baseball in 2014, will be the Marlins’ new chief executive officer. He has said that he wants to make the Marlins a “first-class” organization and that his goal is to win a World Series.
The Marlins have not made the playoffs since winning the World Series in 2003 and have not had a winning season since 2009. They finished last in the National League East this past season with a record of 77-85.
Jeter’s Role with the Team
Derrick Jeter, former New York Yankees shortstop, is now a co-owner of the Miami Marlins. He became a part-owner of the team in September 2017. As a part-owner, Jeter has a hand in all baseball operations decisions.
Jeter is in charge of the team’s baseball and business operations
Former New York Yankees captain and shortstop Derek Jeter became a part-owner of the Miami Marlins in September 2017. Jeter’s group paid $1.2 billion for a controlling stake in the team, making it the second most expensive sale of an MLB franchise in history.
As part of his ownership role, Jeter is in charge of the team’s baseball and business operations. He has already made a number of changes to the organization, including trading several star players, firing members of the coaching staff, and hiring a new general manager.
Jeter has said that he plans to build the Marlins into a “world-class” organization and hopes to bring a championship to Miami.
Jeter is working to increase the team’s value
Jeter is working hard to increase the value of the team. He is looking to make some changes to the team’s roster and is also working on increasing ticket sales. Jeter wants the team to be successful both on and off the field, and he is confident that he can make that happen.
Jeter is also working to increase ticket sales and improve the team’s stadium
While Jeter has no previous experience working in an MLB front office, the 42-year-old is said to be taking an active role in the Marlins’ day-to-day operations. According to The Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo, Jeter has been ” intimately involved in every facet of the organization,” including player personnel decisions, ticket sales, and ballpark renovations.
Jeter’s group is reportedly also looking to sell some of the team’s minor league affiliates, as well as the organization’s stake in a regional sports network.
