What Baseball Teams Are Left In The Playoffs?
Contents
The MLB playoffs are underway and we’re down to the final four teams. Who will make it to the World Series?
American League
As of October 8th, four teams remain in the race for the American League pennant: the New York Yankees, the Houston Astros, the Minnesota Twins, and the Tampa Bay Rays. These teams have fought hard all season long and they’re not ready to give up yet. Who will emerge victorious?
The New York Yankees
The New York Yankees are an American professional baseball team based in the Bronx, New York. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City, the other being the National League’s (NL) New York Mets. The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the modern Baltimore Orioles). In 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise after it ceased operations and moved it to New York City, renaming the club the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were officially renamed the Yankees in 1913.
The Boston Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox are an American professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. The Red Sox have won nine World Series championships, tied for the third-most of any MLB team, and they have played in 13.
Their most recent appearance and win was in 2018. The team founded as one of the American League’s eight charter franchises in 1901. Fenway Park has been home to the Red Sox since 1912, and it is the oldest ballpark currently in use by a Major League team. The name “Red Sox” was chosen by owner John I. Taylor after previous owner Benjamin Bridge sold the team shortly before Thanksgiving in 1907, following the conclusion of its first season in the AL.
The red sock portion of the name refers to socks worn by the players that were traditionally part of baseball uniforms until the mid-20th century; prior to that time, players generally wore white socks with their uniforms.
The Houston Astros
The American League playoff field is set, and the Houston Astros will have home-field advantage throughout the postseason. The Astros (107-55) clinched the best record in the majors for the third straight season Friday night when they beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-2. The Astros will open the AL Division Series at home on either Oct. 4 or 5 against the wild-card winner.
National League
There are two teams left in the National League playoffs, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Los Angeles Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers are a professional baseball team based in Los Angeles, California. The Dodgers compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) West division. Established in 1883 in Brooklyn, New York, the team moved to Los Angeles before the 1958 season. They played for four seasons at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum before moving to their current home of Dodgers Stadium in 1962.
The Dodgers as a franchise have won six World Series titles and 21 National League pennants. 11 NL MVP award winners have played for the Dodgers, earning them the second-most MVP awards among any NL team, behind only the San Francisco Giants. The team has also produced 18 Rookie of the Year Award winners, twice as many as the next closest team, including four consecutive from 1979 to 1982 and five consecutive from 1992 to 1996. In 2019, Forbes valued the Dodgers at $3 billion, making them the most valuable sports franchise in North America.
The Milwaukee Brewers
The Milwaukee Brewers are an American professional baseball team based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Brewers compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) Central division. The team is named after the city’s association with the brewing industry. Since their formation in 1969, the Brewers have played their home games at Miller Park, which has a seating capacity of 41,900.
The team played their first game as an expansion team in April 1970, and won their first NL Championship Series in October 1982. They lost the World Series that year to the St. Louis Cardinals, but won the Series again in October 1987, when they defeated the Cardinals again. The Brewers reached the playoffs for a third time in 2008, when they beat the Chicago Cubs in the NL Wild Card tie-breaker game to earn their first berth since 1982.
The Chicago Cubs
The Chicago Cubs are an American professional baseball team based in Chicago, Illinois. The Cubs compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) Central division. The team plays its home games at Wrigley Field, located on the city’s North Side.
