American League
The American League of Professional Baseball Clubs, or simply the American League (AL), is one of two leagues that make up Major League Baseball (MLB) in the United States and Canada. It developed from the Western League, a minor league based in the Great Lakes states, which eventually aspired to major league status. It is sometimes called the Junior Circuit because it claimed Major League status for the 1901 season, 25 years after the formation of the National League.
The 2019 American League champion is the Houston Astros.
National League
The National League of Professional Baseball Clubs, known simply as the National League (NL), is the older of two leagues constituting Major League Baseball (MLB) in the United States and Canada, and the older of three leaguestructured as a major professional baseball league. It consists of 30 teams, and each team in the NL plays all other teams in the league during a162-game season.
In addition to teams located in the United States, there are also two Canadian franchises, both located in Toronto. These Canadian teams compete with nine American teams for divisional and wild card playoff berths. Through interleague play, each club also plays 22 games against clubs from the other Major League, for a total of 3082 games over the course of a 162-game season.
