Wild Card Playoffs

The NFL playoffs are a single-elimination tournament held after the regular season to determine the National Football League (NFL) champion. Six teams from each of the league’s two conferences qualify for the playoffs based on regular season records. A tie-breaking procedure exists if required based on head-to-head results, conference record, or record against common opponents. As of 2017, four division winners and two wild card teams advance to the first round of the playoffs, or the Wild Card Playoffs. The four division winners are seeded 1–4 based on their overall won-lost-tied record, and the wild card teams are seeded 5 and 6. The top seed from each conference receives a bye (a “free pass”) to the second round of playoffs, or the Divisional Playoffs. In 2017, this meant that both AFC #1 and NFC #1 would not play in the first round
