Keyword Research
If you’re new to keyword research, the process can seem daunting. There are a lot of moving parts, and it’s easy to get lost in the weeds. But don’t worry-we’re here to help. In this article, we’ll give you a crash course in keyword research. We’ll cover the basics of how to do keyword research, what tools to use, and what to do with your findings.
Identify your competitors
In order to find the right keywords for your SEO strategy, you need to first identify your competitors. This can be done by searching for your main keywords on Google and taking note of the websites that come up most often in the search results. Once you have a list of competitor websites, you can use a tool like Moz’s Open Site Explorer to get a list of the keywords that they are targeting.
Conduct a keyword gap analysis
As you probably know, keyword research is essential for any SEO or SEM campaign. It allows you to understand what terms your target audience is using to find similar products or services, and also provides insight into which keywords are most competitive.
One way to get a better understanding of the competition for certain keywords is to conduct a keyword gap analysis. This involves looking at the top ranking pages for a particular keyword or phrase, and then determining which words or phrases they are targeting that you are not. This can give you a good idea of where your website is falling behind the competition, and where you need to focus your efforts in order to catch up.
To conduct a keyword gap analysis, start by making a list of the top 10 ranking pages for your target keyword or phrase. Then, using a tool like Ahrefs or Moz, look at the keywords that these pages are targeting. Make a note of any that you are not currently targeting on your own website. Finally, compare this list to your own list of targeted keywords to see where the gaps are.
By conducting a keyword gap analysis, you can get a good sense of where your website needs to improve in order to better compete for certain keywords. This can help guide your SEO and SEM efforts moving forward, and ensure that you are making the most efficient use of your time and resources.
Find your main ‘money’ keywords
When starting your keyword research, it’s important to think about what kind of keywords you want to target. There are three main types of keywords:
-Brand keywords: these are keywords that include your brand name, or variations of it. For example, “NBA” or “National Basketball Association”.
-Product keywords: these are keywords that describe your products or services. For example, “basketball” or “basketball shoes”.
-Generic keywords: these are general terms that are not specific to your brand or product. For example, “sport” or “athletic”.
Once you have identified the type of keywords you want to target, you can begin brainstorming potential terms. There are a few different ways to do this:
-Think about the questions people might ask about your product or service. For example, “What is the best basketball shoe?” or “Where can I buy a basketball?”.
-Think about the words people might use to search for your product or service. For example, “basketball shoes” or “athletic apparel”.
-Use a keyword research tool like Google Keyword Planner to get ideas for potential keywords.
Technical SEO
Optimizing your website for the search engines can be a complex and daunting task, but it is important to make sure your site is visible to potential customers. Technical SEO is the process of optimizing your website’s code and structure to make it easier for the search engines to find and index your content.
Leverage “Inspect URL” feature in GSC
GSC’s “Inspect URL” feature lets you test a live URL to see how it would fare in Google’s search results. Simply enter the URL into the “Inspect any URL…” box and click “analyze”.
GSC will then show you how the URL would fare in Google’s search results, as well as any potential warnings or errors.
This is a valuable tool for SEOs, as it can help you identify potential issues with a live URL before they impact your search rankings.
Ensure your website is mobile-friendly
One of the most important ranking factors for Google is whether your website is mobile-friendly or not. In other words, you need to ensure that your website can be properly displayed and used on a mobile device.
You can use Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test tool to check if your website is mobile-friendly. Simply enter your website’s URL and Google will analyze your website to see if it is mobile-friendly.
If your website is not mobile-friendly, you need to make some changes to make it more responsive and user-friendly for mobile users. Some things you can do include using a responsive web design, using smaller images, and compressing files.
Check your site’s loading speed
Your site’s loading speed is important for a few reasons. First, faster loading sites tend to rank higher in search engine results. Second, people are more likely to abandon a slow-loading site than one that loads quickly. Finally, site speed is a factor in Google’s search algorithm.
There are a few ways to improve your site’s loading speed. One is to optimize your images. Another is to minify your HTML, CSS, and JavaScript files. You can also use a content delivery network (CDN) to serve your content from multiple locations around the world.
On-page and Content
Do you have missing, duplicate, or truncated title tags? If so, then you could be missing out on valuable traffic from Google.
A title tag is an HTML element that specifies the title of a web page. Title tags are displayed on search engine results pages (SERPs) as the clickable headline for a given result, and are important for usability, SEO, and social sharing.
Missing title tags can cause your pages to appear as “Untitled” in SERPs, which can hurt your click-through rates (CTRs). Duplicate title tags can also cause confusion for users and search engines, and can lead to lower CTRs. Finally, truncated title tags can also result in lower CTRs, as they may fail to accurately describe the page’s content.
To fix missing, duplicate, or truncated title tags:
– Make sure that all of your pages have unique and descriptive titles that accurately reflect their content.
– If you have multiple pages with the same or similar titles, consider using canonical tags to point search engines to the correct versions of these pages.
– Avoid using excessively long or short titles; aim for a length of 50-60 characters.
– Use relevant keywords in your titles to help improve your SEO
Find and fix duplicate or missing meta descriptions
The meta description is a brief summary of the content on a webpage. It’s important to have unique, accurate, and keyword-rich meta descriptions for each page on your website, as they help improve your click-through rate from SERPs.
If you find that you have duplicate or missing meta descriptions on your website, there are a few ways to fix them:
– If you have duplicate meta descriptions, choose one unique description and use it for all of the pages that currently have the same description.
– If you have missing meta descriptions, create unique and accurate descriptions for each of the pages that don’t have one. Be sure to include relevant keywords for each page.
– If you’re not sure how to create or optimize your meta descriptions, consider working with an SEO company or expert who can help.
H1 tags are a critical on-page SEO element – they tell both visitors and search engines what your page is about.
Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon to see multiple H1 tags on a single page, which can be confusing for both visitors and search engines. In most cases, only the first H1 tag will be given any weight by Google, so it’s important to make sure that this tag accurately reflects the topic of your page.
To check for and fix multiple H1 tags on your pages:
1. Use a tool like Screaming Frog to crawl your site and identify pages with more than one H1 tag.
2. On each of these pages, take a look at the content to see if there is a clear hierarchy being represented by the H1 tags. If not, adjust the tags accordingly so that there is only one H1 per page, and make sure that this tag accurately reflects the main topic of the page.
3. Repeat this process periodically to ensure that new pages added to your site are following best practices with regard to H1 usage.
Off-Page SEO
Off-page SEO is the process of optimizing a website for better search engine rankings. The goal of off-page SEO is to increase the visibility of a website in the search engine results pages (SERPs). A variety of methods can be used to achieve this goal, but the most common and effective method is link building.
Analyze your competitor’s link profile
One of the most important aspects of off-page SEO is link building. In order to build links, you need to first analyze your competitor’s link profile. This will give you an idea of what kind of links they have and where they are getting them from. Once you have a good understanding of their link profile, you can start to build links of your own.
Conduct a link intersect analysis
Link intersect analysis is a great way to find link opportunities. It’s also a very effective way to spy on your competitors to see what kinds of links they’re targeting.
To do a link intersect analysis, you need to use a tool like Ahrefs. Once you have Ahrefs set-up, head over to the “Content Explorer” and search for a term that you want to rank for.
For this example, I’ll use the term “link building.”
Once you’ve entered your search term and hit “explore,” Ahrefs will show you all of the pieces of content that rank in Google for that term.
Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and you’ll see a section called “Outgoing links.” This is where Ahrefs shows you all of the links that are pointing to the ranking articles.
To do a link intersect analysis, simply copy all of the URLs from the “Outgoing links” section and paste them into Excel. Then, remove any duplicates.
Next, it’s time to do some quick research on each of the websites that are linking to your competitors. Go through each website and see if there’s an opportunity for you to get a link from them as well.
Target your competitors’ broken backlinks
Any time a link to your website appears on another website, it’s like getting a vote. The more votes you have, the better, right? Not necessarily.
The quality of the websites that link to you matters just as much as the quantity. In fact, having low-quality websites link to you can actually hurt your SEO. Google looks at the quality of links when determining where to rank your website in search results.
One way to take advantage of your competition is to find out which websites are linking to them and try to get those same websites to link to you instead. Chances are, if they’re linking to your competitors, they’d be happy to link to you as well. And if they’re linking to multiple similar businesses, they might be more willing to switch their link over to you if you offer them something in return, like a discount or a free product.
