American League
The American League Championship Series (ALCS) is a best-of-seven playoff pitting the two best teams in the American League against each other. The winner of this series goes on to play the winner of the National League Championship Series (NLCS) in the World Series.
The ALCS has been broadcast on television by Fox since 2000. Prior to that, it was aired on NBC from 1980-2000. Before 1980, it was not regularly televised.
The current television contract for the ALCS is set to expire after the 2021 season.
Playoff Baseball on Radio
The MLB playoffs are underway and if you’re looking for how to listen to the action on radio, we have you covered. Just about every game during the regular season is carried on the radio by one of the team’s local radio affiliates. That won’t be the case during the playoffs, as most of the games will be on ESPN Radio.
National League
National League teams began playing a best-of-seven playoff series in order to determine which team would represent the league in the World Series.
-First played in 1969
-Teams are seeded according to their won-loss records
The format of the National League playoffs has changed several times since it was first introduced. The current format, which has been used since 2019, features two best-of-three Wild Card series followed by two best-of-seven Divisional Series. The winners of the Divisional Series then face off in a best-of-seven League Championship Series, with the winner advances to the World Series.
