The NBA Finals is the championship series of the playoffs and is contested between the winners of the Eastern and Western Conference finals. The Eastern Conference champion is awarded the O’Brien Trophy, while the Western Conference champion is awarded the Larry O’ Brien trophy.
In order to make it to the NBA playoffs, teams must first compete in a 82-game regular season. The regular season starts in October and ends in April. Each team plays every other team in their conference four times and every team in the other conference three times. At the end of the regular season, the team with the best record in each conference is awarded the first seed, while the team with worst record is given last seed. The remaining teams are seeded anywhere from second to seventh based on their records.
Once the playoff seedings are set, each series is a best-of-seven format meaning that whichever team wins four games first advances to next round while other is eliminated from contention. In each series, games 1, 2, 5 and 7 are played at home arenas of team with better regular season record while games 3, 4 and 6 are played at home arenas of team with worse regular season record.
