List of NFL Teams

There are 32 teams in the National Football League (NFL). The league is divided into two conferences, the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). Each conference is then divided into four divisions, North, South, East, and West. The table below lists each NFL team by division.

Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals are a professional American football franchise based in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The Cardinals compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) West division. The Cardinals were founded as the Morgan Athletic Club in 1898, and are the oldest continuously run professional football team in the United States. The Cardinals play their home games at State Farm Stadium, which opened in 2006 and is located in Glendale, Arizona. Since 1988, the Cardinals have been headquartered in Tempe, Arizona.

The team was established in Chicago in 1898 as an amateur football team and joined the NFL as a charter member on September 17, 1920. Along with the Chicago Bears, the club is one of two NFL franchises still based in its original city. It then played in St. Louis, Missouri from 1960 to 1987 (occasionally referred to as the “Big Red” or “card-inals”) before moving west to Tempe to play at Sun Devil Stadium between 1988 and 2005 (occasionally referred to as the “birds” or “birds of prey”). The franchise shifted its focus toward a more traditional offensive approach during this time period with quarterbacks Jim Hart and Neil Lomax leading a high-scoring attack that produced 11 divisional championships over 25 years while only missing out on two playoff bids during that span.[1][2] In 2012–13, under head coach Bruce Arians after winning consecutive NFC West division titles for four consecutive seasons from 2008–09 through 2011–12,[3] with their lone loss coming at home to Tom Brady and eventual Super Bowl XLVI champions New England Patriots.[4]

In 2013 Arians became just one of four coaches to win Coach of The Year honors after leading his team to 10+ wins during his first season with them as head coach.[5] The following year under Arians’ guidance quarterback Carson Palmer set franchise records for passing yards (4,671), passing touchdowns (35), rushing touchdowns by a quarterback (6) while also becoming first Cardinal quarterback ever selected to Pro Bowl.[6][7] In 2015, Larry Fitzgerald became second wide receiver ever to reach 1,000 career receptions while turning 33 years old becoming also oldest player ever selected to Pro Bowl at that age.[8][9]

The Falcons compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) South division. The Falcons joined the NFL in 1965 as an expansion team, after the NFL offered then-owner Rankin Smith a franchise to keep him from joining the rival American Football League (AFL). In their 51 years of existence, the Falcons have compiled a record of 368–466–6 (.442), winning division championships in 1980, 1998, 2004, 2010, 2012, and 2016. The team plays its home games at M&T Bank Stadium and is headquartered in Owings Mills.

The Ravens were established in 1996, when Art Modell, who was then the owner of the Cleveland Browns, announced plans to relocate the franchise from Cleveland to Baltimore in response to a lawsuit brought by then-Attorney General of Ohio, Andrew Cuomo. As part of a settlement between Modell and the city of Cleveland, Modell was required to leave the Browns’ history and records in Cleveland for a replacement team and replacement personnel that would assume the legal history of the Browns. In return, he was allowed to take his own personnel and team to Baltimore, where such personnel would then form an expansion team. The Ravens have qualified for the NFL playoffs ten times since 2000, with two Super Bowl victories (Super Bowl XXXV and Super Bowl XLVII), two AFC Championship titles (2000 and 2012), 15 playoff victories (10th all-time), four AFC North division titles (2003, 2006, 2011, 2018), and are currently tied with the Indianapolis Colts for the second-longest streak of consecutive playoff appearances in NFL history (nine straight seasons). The name “Ravens” was inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s poem “The Raven”.
