How to watch the NBA All-Star Game?
The National Basketball Association (NBA) All-Star Game is a basketball exhibition game hosted every February by the National Basketball Association (NBA), matchingselect players from the league’s Eastern Conference against its Western Conference. Each conference team consists of 12 players, making it 24 in total. It is the featured event of NBA All-Star Weekend, a three-day event which goes from Friday to Sunday. The All-Star Game was first televised on NBC in 1953.
The format of the game has evolved over time. The original format featured two teams of five players each, playing eight minute quarters. The Eastern Conference team won 25–20. In the second year, playing time was increased to ten minutes per quarter and the winning team was determined by religious affiliation: Jews vs. Protestants; this East–West matchup ended in a 32–28 victory for the Easterners.
From 1955 to 1958, playing time was reduced to eight minutes per quarter; as a result, scoring declined significantly. In 1959, Maurice Podoloff, then-president of the NBA, changed the format so that each team played against each other at least once during the season; this ensured that all NBA teams would be represented at least once during All-Star Weekend. In 1963, Chuck Daly (coach of the Detroit Pistons) and Jack Ramsay (coach of the Portland Trail Blazers) led their respective teams to victory; this marked the first time that head coaches had led their teams to victory in an All-Star Game.
In 1971, fans were given the opportunity to vote for conference starting lineups; this gave rise to popularity of voting for Yao Ming and Shaquille O’Neal regardless of their conference affiliation due to their global fanbases when they were active players. The Sixers’ Julius Erving scored a then-All-Star record 41 points en route to capturing MVP honors in 1977; Erving remains as one holding such record for most points scored by an individual player in an All-Star Game.
Since 1980, every All-Star Game has been televised nationally on American broadcast television networks NBC/ABC in even numbered years and TNT/TBS in odd numbered years; since 2003 when ABC got rights back from NBC (which had broadcast rights from 1963 until 2002), ABC has also simulcasted TNT’s coverage during their odd numbered year broadcasts giving both networks rights to show live coverage during those years making it so that every game since 2003 has been seen on national television making it easier for fans around North America to see every game live no matter what channel they have..
