WWE Championship Belt Overview

The WWE Championship is a world heavyweight championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE on the SmackDown brand. It is one of WWE’s two world championships, along with the WWE Universal Championship that was created for the Raw brand as a result of the 2016 WWE draft. The current champion is Drew McIntyre, who is in his second reign. The title was introduced in 1963 by the then-World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) as the WWWF World Heavyweight Championship, after the promotion seceded from the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA). The inaugural champion was Buddy Rogers.

Design

The current design for the WWE Championship was introduced at WWE’s 2009 TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs pay-per-view event, and was brought back in 2016. The center of the title features a large circular gold disc with a relief of an eagle with its wings spread open. The border of the plaque is raised and decorated with 46 cubic zirconia stones. Above the eagle is a smaller gold disc decorated with a relief of a globe inside of a laurel wreath. Encircling the two discs are many thin gold lines that form an octagon shape. The WWE Championship belt strap is made from black leather and is approximately 3 inches (76 mm) wide. It is adorned with several gold objects: two rectangular plates on each side near the buckle, which are engraved with “WWE Champion”; two crossed keys in the middle; and various other shapes along the length of the strap.

The WWE Championship belt is one of the most iconic belts in all of professional wrestling. Original WWE Championship Belt

In 1963, the WWE Championship was created by WWE (then known as the World Wide Wrestling Federation, or WWWF). The inaugural champion was Buddy Rogers, who defeated Antonino Rocca in the final of a tournament. The title originally represented the North American region, and it wasn’t until 1979 that WWE debuted a world championship.

The original WWE Championship belt was a simple design, with a large gold buckle in the center featuring the WWWF logo. As such, two new belts were introduced: Raw’s World Heavyweight Championship and SmackDown’s WWE Championship (which would later become known as the WWE Undisputed Championship after Raw and SmackDown merged their titles in 2003).

The World Heavyweight Championship belts would see several redesigns over the years (most notably in 2004 when Triple H won it), but the WWE Championship/Undisputed Championship belt would remain largely unchanged until 2013 when WWE introduced a new unified championship following WrestleMania 29.

The current championship belt is very similar to belts used during much of WWE’s history; however, it features an updated logo in its center plate as well as updated side plates bearing each brand’s logos (Raw and SmackDown).

New WWE Championship Belt

In terms of overall design, the Undisputed WWE Championship belt incorporates elements from both its predecessors; primarily the center plate from the Big Gold Belt (used as the center plate of the title belt since 1988), while also inheriting several design aspects introduced with theWCW World Heavyweight Championship title belt in 1991 (namely the world globe situated atop each side plate). The weaving along
the bottom edge of each side plate is also similar to that found on both world titles prior to 2002.

World Heavyweight Championship Belt

The World Heavyweight Championship Belt is a professional wrestling world heavyweight championship belt created and promoted by WWE.
