National Football League (NFL)

The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league consisting of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). The NFL is one of the four major professional sports leagues in North America, and the highest professional level of American football in the world.[1] The NFL’s 17-week regular season runs from early September to late December, with each team playing 16 games and having one bye week. Following the conclusion of the regular season, six teams from each conference (four division winners and two wild card teams) advance to the playoffs, a single-elimination tournament culminating in the Super Bowl, which is usually held on the first Sunday in February and is played between the champions of the NFC and AFC.

The league was formed in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA) before renaming itself as the National Football League for the 1922 season. The NFL considers itself to be the oldest professional sports league in America,[2] and traces its roots to 1920,[3][4] when several teams from regional leagues such as Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Illinois formed an informal sanctioning body known informally as “The Committee”.[5] This organization eventually became officially known as National Football League. National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a nonprofit organization that regulates student athletes from 1,268 North American institutions and conferences. It also organizes the athletic programs of many colleges and universities in the United States and Canada, and helps more than 480,000 college student-athletes who compete annually in college sports. The organization is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana.

In its 2016–17 fiscal year the NCAA took in $1.06 billion in revenue, 82% of which was generated by men’s basketball. In August 1973, the current three-division system of Division I, Division II, and Division III was adopted by the NCAA membership in a special convention. Under NCAA rules, Division I and Division II schools can offer scholarships to athletes for playing a sport. Division III schools may not offer any athletic scholarships.

There are currently 1,268 American institutions and conferences that are members of the NCAA. The most recent member to join was Merrimack College on July 1, 2013.

Major League Baseball (MLB) is a professional baseball organization, the oldest of the four major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada. A total of 30 teams play in the National League (NL) and American League (AL), with 15 teams in each league. The NL and AL were formed as separate legal entities in 1876 and 1901, respectively. After cooperating but remaining legally separate entities beginning in 1903, the leagues merged into a single organization led by the Commissioner of Baseball in 2000. The organization also oversees Minor League Baseball, which comprises about 240 teams affiliated with the Major League clubs. With the World Baseball Softball Confederation, MLB manages the international World Baseball Classic tournament.

The National Basketball Association (NBA) is the men’s professional basketball league in North America, composed of 30 teams (29 in the United States and 1 in Canada). It is widely considered to be the premier men’s professional basketball league in the world. The NBA is an active member of USA Basketball (USAB),[1] which is recognized by FIBA (also known as the International Basketball Federation) as the national governing body for basketball in the United States. The NBA is one of the four major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada. NBA players are the world’s best paid athletes by average annual salary per player.[2]

The league was founded in New York City on June 6, 1946, as the Basketball Association of America (BAA).[3][4] The league adopted the name National Basketball Association on August 3, 1949, after merging with its rival National Basketball League (NBL).[5] The league’s several international as well as individual team offices are directed out of its head offices situated in the Olympic Tower at 645 Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, New York City.[6][7]

Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA)

The WNBA is a professional basketball league in the United States. It is composed of twelve teams, eleven from the United States and one from Canada. The season runs from May to September, with playoffs in October.

The WNBA began play in 1997 as the women’s counterpart to the National Basketball Association (NBA). Like the NBA, the WNBA has a thirty-two-week regular season and playoffs at the end of the season to determine the league champion.

Unlike the NBA, however, all games are played in the summer due to scheduling conflicts with college basketball. The league’s All-Star Game was also moved to the summer so as not to conflict with the Olympics.

The WNBA has been praised for its positive effect on women’s sports and for providing opportunities for female athletes who might not otherwise have them. The league has also been criticized for its low pay, lack of media coverage, and lack of interest from fans.
