What Happened in NFL News This Week?
Contents
This week in NFL news was pretty eventful. The biggest story was probably Tom Brady’s return to the New England Patriots.
Antonio Brown
This week, Antonio Brown was released by the New England Patriots after just one game. This came after a series of events that included Brown being accused of sexual assault, refusing to practice, and getting into a heated argument with Patriots’ staff. Let’s take a look at what happened.
Released by the Patriots
Antonio Brown was released by the New England Patriots on Friday, September 20th, just one day after the team acquired him in a trade with the Oakland Raiders. The wide receiver had been facing allegations of sexual assault and misconduct, which led to his release from the Raiders.
Sued by Britney Taylor
In NFL news this week, Antonio Brown was sued by his former trainer, Britney Taylor. Taylor accuses Brown of sexually assaulting her on three separate occasions in 2017 and 2018. Brown has denied the allegations, and his lawyer has said that the lawsuit is “nothing more than a money grab.”
This is not the first time Brown has been accused of sexual assault. In 2016, he was accused of sexually assaulting a woman who was working as his personal trainer. Brown denied those allegations as well.
Odell Beckham Jr.
This week, Odell Beckham Jr. was traded from the New York Giants to the Cleveland Browns. The Browns gave up a first and third-round pick in next year’s draft, and also Jabrill Peppers.
Suffers quad injury
NFL star Odell Beckham Jr. suffered a quad injury in the Cleveland Browns’ game against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, and was forced to leave the game. The exact extent of the injury is not yet known, but it is likely to keep Beckham out for at least a few weeks. This is a significant blow to the Browns, who were counting on Beckham to be a key part of their offense this season.
Could miss start of season
It’s looking more and more like Odell Beckham Jr. will not be on the field for the start of the regular season, as he is still recovering from a preseason ankle injury. Beckham has not practiced since he was injured on August 21, and while head coach Ben McAdoo says Beckham is “making progress,” there is no timetable for his return. This is obviously a huge blow to the Giants’ offense, as Beckham is one of the best receivers in the league. If he does miss the start of the season, it will be interesting to see how New York’s offense fares without him.
Le’Veon Bell
Le’Veon Bell, running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers, has been in the news a lot lately. He was recently franchise tagged by the Steelers, which means he will make $12.1 million next season. However, he has said that he is not happy with this and wants a long-term contract. He has also been in the news for his holdout this season.
Signs with Jets
The former Pittsburgh Steelers running back finally got his wish and was released from his franchise tag on Tuesday. On Wednesday, he signed a four-year, $52.5 million contract with the New York Jets, making him the highest-paid running back in NFL history. In his first season with the Jets, Bell is set to make $15 million in base salary and a $8 million signing bonus, with a cap hit of just over $13 million.
Will play on franchise tag
Per multiple sources, Le’Veon Bell will play on the franchise tag this season. The deadline for him to sign a long-term deal was 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, and he will now earn $14.5 million this season under the tag. The two sides were reportedly close to a deal that would have averaged $17 million per year, but they couldn’t agree on guaranteed money and other financial details.
Josh Gordon
Josh Gordon was traded to the New England Patriots this week in a move that sent shockwaves through the NFL. The Patriots have been known for taking on troubled players and giving them a second chance, and that’s exactly what they’re doing with Gordon. The Patriots are hoping that they can get the best out of Gordon and help him turn his life around.
Suspended indefinitely
Josh Gordon, the NFL’s leading receiver, has been suspended indefinitely for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. He will not be eligible for reinstatement for at least one year.
This is a big blow to the Browns, who were counting on Gordon to be their No. 1 receiver this season. He was suspended for the first two games of the season but came back and had a huge impact, catching 87 passes for 1,646 yards and nine touchdowns.
The Browns are now in a difficult position, as they don’t have much depth at receiver behind Gordon. They will likely have to rely heavily on running back Trent Richardson to carry the offense.
Reinstated by NFL
Josh Gordon has been reinstated by the NFL, effective immediately. He is eligible to participate in all off-season activities, including training camp and the preseason.
The 27-year-old wide receiver was suspended indefinitely in December 2018 for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. He had previously been suspended for the entire 2015 and 2016 seasons.
Gordon released a statement on Thursday, thanking the NFL for giving him another chance. “I am grateful to Commissioner Goodell and his team for bringing me back to the League,” he said. “I also appreciate all of the support I received from my coaches, teammates, and fans during my time away from the game.”
