What Happened in the NFL Draft?
Contents
The NFL Draft is complete, and there were plenty of surprises. See what happened with the first round picks, and find out which teams made the best moves.
The First Round
The First Pick
The first pick in the NFL draft is usually given to the team with the worst record from the previous season. This year, that honor goes to theHouston Texans, who went 4-12 in 2020. The Texans have the option of drafting a quarterback, which many experts believe they will do.
The Second Pick
With the first pick in the NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs selected Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel. The second pick of the draft belonged to the St. Louis Rams, who selected Auburn offensive tackle Greg Robinson.
The Third Pick
The third pick of the NFL draft generally belongs to the team with the third-worst record from the previous season. In most cases, this will be a team that just missed out on making the playoffs. The third pick offers a good chance to get an impact player, as some of the best players in NFL history have been drafted with this pick. Notable examples include Barry Sanders, who was taken with the third pick in 1989, and Tony Gonzalez, who was taken with the third pick in 1997.
In recent years, the third pick has been used on quarterbacks more often than any other position. This is due to the increasing importance of the quarterback position in the modern NFL. In 2014, Blake Bortles was taken with the third pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars, and he went on to have a solid rookie season. In 2015, Jameis Winston was taken with the first overall pick, and Marcus Mariota was taken with the second overall pick. These two players were considered to be the best quarterbacks in that year’s draft class, and they were both taken within the first three picks.
The Second Round
The second round of the NFL Draft was full of surprises. Some teams reached for players they probably could have gotten in the third round, while other teams got great value with their picks. Let’s take a look at some of the stand-out picks from the second round.
The First Pick
The second round of the NFL draft is underway, with the Cincinnati Bengals selecting running back Joe Mixon from Oklahoma with the first pick.
The Second Pick
The NFL draft took place between April 25 and 27, with the first round being held on the 25th. The Cincinnati Bengals made Joe Burrow the first overall pick, while the Washington Redskins selected Chase Young second. The Detroit Lions then took Jeff Okudah third, making him the highest-selected cornerback since Sean Taylor in 2004.
The Third Pick
The Carolina Panthers made a big splash in the first round of the NFL Draft, selecting quarterback Mackenzie Milton with the third overall pick. The selection was a bit of a surprise, as many experts had predicted the Panthers would go with running back Josh Jacobs or wide receiver D.K. Metcalf.
Despite concerns about his ability to stay healthy after suffering a serious knee injury in 2018, Milton is considered a talented quarterback with a strong arm and good accuracy. He’ll have the chance to compete for the starting job with incumbent Cam Newton, who is coming off of shoulder surgery.
The Panthers also added some help on defense in the first round, selectingClelin Ferrell with the seventh overall pick. Ferrell is a 6’5″, 264-pound defensive end out of Clemson who is considered to be one of the best pass-rushers in this year’s draft class. He’ll join a Carolina defense that finished sixth in the NFL in sacks last season.
The Third Round
The NFL draft is an annual event in which the 32 teams in the National Football League (NFL) select players from college football to be on their team. There are seven rounds in the NFL draft, and in the third round, the team with the best record from the previous year picks last.
The First Pick
The first pick in the 2016 NFL Draft belonged to the Los Angeles Rams. They used that pick on quarterback Jared Goff out of Cal. The selection was widely seen as a reach by the Rams, as most experts had Goff going off the board later in the first round or even in the second.
The Second Pick
With the first overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals selected Quarterback Joe Burrow out of Louisiana State University. The Bengals were widely expected to make Burrow the first overall pick, and he is now tasked with turning around a franchise that has not won a playoff game since 1990.
With the second pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Washington Redskins selected Chase Young, a defensive end out of Ohio State University. Young was widely considered to be the best player in the draft, and he will instantly improve a Redskins defense that ranked near the bottom of the league in 2019.
The Third Pick
After the Kansas City Chiefs and the Jacksonville Jaguars selected quarterbacks with the first two picks in the NFL draft, the New York Jets were on the clock with the third overall selection.
The Jets had been rumored to be interested in taking a quarterback with this pick, but they instead opted to trade down, acquiring additional picks from the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for the third overall selection.
With the third pick in the draft, the Colts selected defensive end Kwity Paye from Michigan.
The Fourth Round
This was the round where most of the trades happened. Three of the first four picks were traded, as well as six of the first ten. As a result, this round took a while to complete. Here are all the picks from the fourth round of the NFL Draft.
The First Pick
With the first pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns selected Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett.
The Second Pick
The second pick in the fourth round of the NFL Draft was wide receiver, Keenan Allen from the University of California. Allen is 6’2” and ran a 4.71 forty-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine. He led the Golden Bears in catches (61), receiving yards (1,262), and receiving touchdowns (6) as a junior in 2012. He was also named “First Team All-Pac-12” and was a semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award, which is given to the nation’s top receiver.
The Third Pick
With the third pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions selected Jeff Okudah, cornerback from Ohio State. Okudah is 6’1” and 205 pounds. He was a three-year starter for the Buckeyes, totaling 119 tackles, six interceptions and two forced fumbles in his career. Okudah is considered a disciplined corner with good size and speed. He projects as a starter in the NFL.
The Fifth Round
The fifth round of the NFL Draft is underway, and there are some interesting picks being made. The Dallas Cowboys have selected cornerback Mike Hughes from UCF with the first pick of the round. The San Francisco 49ers have taken guard Colton McKivitz from West Virginia with the second pick.
The First Pick
The 2018 NFL Draft was the 83rd annual meeting of National Football League (NFL) franchises to select newly eligible football players. It was held on April 26–28 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and was the first draft to take place in an NFL stadium and the first to be held in Texas. The draft was relocated from its usual location of New York City’s Radio City Music Hall due to a scheduling conflict at the venue. In order to make room for additional seating at AT&T Stadium, the draft was truncated to two days with Rounds 2–3 held on April 27 and Rounds 4–7 on April 28.
The first round had 32 selections and took place on April 26, followed by rounds two through seven on April 27–28. These selections included 22 non-traded compensatory picks. The Cleveland Browns selected Baker Mayfield with the first overall pick, making him the third consecutive Heisman Trophy winner and fourth consecutive quarterback to be drafted first overall. Saquon Barkley went second overall to the New York Giants, becoming just the third running back selected in the top five since 1967 and only the fourth player since 1950 to be selected within the top two picks while also winning Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. Four quarterbacks were taken in Round 1, marking only the second time four quarterbacks were chosen in the opening round of an NFL draft with 1983 being the other occasion; both times it happened following a season where three quarterbacks were drafted within
The Second Pick
The Jacksonville Jaguars selected quarterback Trevor Lawrence from Clemson with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft. The first round of the draft took place on Thursday, April 29, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
With their second-round pick (No. 33 overall), the Jaguars surprised many by selecting running back Travis Etienne from Clemson. Etienne was widely considered to be a first-round talent, so the Jaguars must have really liked him to take him with their second pick.
Etienne is a two-time ACC Player of the Year and a Heisman Trophy finalist. He’s Clemson’s all-time leader in rushing yards (4,952) and rushing touchdowns (78). He’ll be a nice complement to Lawrence in Jacksonville’s offense.
The Third Pick
The Kansas City Chiefs selected LSU cornerback Kristian Fulton with the No. 58 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft.
Fulton was a two-year starter at LSU and was considered one of the top cornerbacks in this year’s draft class. He had 31 tackles, two interceptions and eight passes defensed last season.
At 6-foot and 197 pounds, Fulton has good size for a cornerback and is considered a good athlete. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.46 seconds at the NFL scouting combine.
The Sixth Round
The sixth round of the NFL draft is where teams start to draft for need over value. This is the round where you start to see a lot of small-school prospects and projects that teams are hoping to develop. There are always a few players who slip through the cracks and turn into good NFL players, but the vast majority of sixth-rounders are role players or backups.
The First Pick
With the first pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals draft Joe Burrow, quarterback from LSU.
The Second Pick
The Indianapolis Colts made history in the 2020 NFL Draft when they selected former Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields with the No. 11 overall pick. Fields becomes the first African American quarterback to be drafted in the first round by the Colts.
This is a significant moment for the NFL and for African American athletes everywhere. For too long, quarterbacks have been disproportionately white and male. But with the selection of Justin Fields, that is beginning to change.
African American quarterbacks have been making waves in the NFL for years now, but they have largely been relegated to backup roles or garbage time duty. That is finally starting to change, and hopefully the selection of Justin Fields will help lead the way to even more opportunities for black quarterbacks in the NFL.
The Third Pick
Trey Lance, a North Dakota State quarterback, was the third pick in the NFL draft on Thursday. He was drafted by the San Francisco
Forty-Niners. Lance is the first quarterback from North Dakota State to be drafted in the NFL.
The Seventh Round
The seventh round of the NFL Draft is typically when the majority of players are drafted. This round is when a lot of the “projects” or players with a lot of potential are drafted. These are players that teams think they can develop into good players down the road. The majority of players drafted in the seventh round never end up becoming starters, but there are always a few players that end up becoming good players.
The First Pick
The first pick in the NFL Draft is one of the most sought-after positions in all of professional sports. It’s an honor that comes with a lot of responsibility, and it’s a position that can change the fortunes of an entire franchise. For better or for worse, the first pick is always under a lot of scrutiny.
This year, the first pick in the NFL Draft was quarterback Kyler Murray from Oklahoma. Murray was widely considered to be the best player in the draft, and he was selected by the Arizona Cardinals with the first overall pick. Murray is a talented young player with a bright future ahead of him, and he has already generated a lot of excitement among Cardinals fans.
Only time will tell whether or not Kyler Murray was worthy of the first overall pick, but he certainly has the potential to be a great player in the NFL. only time will tell if he was the right choice for the Cardinals, but they are certainly hopeful that he will be a star for them for many years to come.
The Second Pick
The San Francisco 49ers had the second pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. With that pick, they selected Nick Bosa, a defensive end out of Ohio State.
Bosa was widely considered to be the best overall prospect in the draft, and he immediately fills a big need for the 49ers. He should be an immediate starter and has the potential to be a Pro Bowl-caliber player for years to come.
The Third Pick
With the third pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions selected corner back Jeff Okudah out of Ohio State. Okudah was widely regarded as the best corner in the draft, and he should immediately step into a starting role for the Lions. He is a big, physical corner with good speed and excellent ball skills. Okudah should help solidify a Lions secondary that was often beaten deep last season.
