WWE Smackdown Predictions
The sixth annual WWE Payback pay-per-view will be broadcast live on WWE Network tonight (May 1, 2017) from the SAP Center in San Jose, California. The event will feature a total of six matches, three of which will be contested for championships. Here are our predictions for tonight’s show.
WWE Championship — Randy Orton (c) vs. Jinder Mahal: This has been one of the most controversial title reigns in recent memory, with many fans feeling that WWE is pushing Mahal purely because of his ethnicity. That said, it would be foolish to underestimate The Modern Day Maharaja, who has proved time and again that he is more than capable of hanging with the best in the business.
Orton is a 13-time world champion and one of the most popular members of the WWE roster, so it’s clear that WWE has big plans for him. We predict that Orton will retain his title tonight and continue to build momentum heading into next month’s Money in the Bank pay-per-view.
WWE United States Championship — Kevin Owens (c) vs. AJ Styles: This is a rematch from last month’s Backlash pay-per-view, where Owens retained his title in a brutal match that saw both men trade multiple serious blows. Owens has been on a tear since returning from injury last year, and there’s no doubt that he is one of the top Superstars in WWE right now.
Styles, on the other hand, is perhaps the most popular Superstar in WWE today and is fresh off a world title reign. We predict that Styles will finally dethrone Owens tonight and become a two-time United States Champion.
