WWE’s The Shield was one of the most dominant factions in WWE history. But what happened to them?
WWE’s The Shield
WWE’s The Shield was a group of three professional wrestlers who debuted in November 2012. The group was made up of Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, and Roman Reigns. They quickly became one of the most popular factions in WWE and were known for their extreme hardcore matches. The Shield was disbanded in May 2014 when Rollins turned on Ambrose and Reigns.
What was The Shield?
The Shield was a professional wrestling stable in WWE that consisted of Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns, and Seth Rollins. The group debuted in November 2012 and quickly became one of the most popular factions in WWE. They went on to have a successful run as a team, winning multiple championships and main eventing several pay-per-view events. The group disbanded in May 2014 when Rollins betrayed Ambrose and Reigns, but they reunited in October 2017 and have been a dominant force in WWE ever since.
What happened to The Shield?
The Shield was a professional wrestling stable in WWE that consisted of Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns, and Seth Rollins. The group debuted on November 18, 2012, at the Survivor Series pay-per-view. It was originally composed of former NXT wrestlers Rollins and Reigns, who were joined by Ambrose, who had been wrestling on the main roster. The Shield was positioned as a heel stable from their debut, with a gimmick of anarchy and using excessive force to help WWE Champion CM Punk retain his title.
Over the next few months, The Shield began to inserted into various feuds on WWE’s main programming to help other heels. This eventually led to a feud with Ryback, which resulted in The Shield’s first WWE pay-per-view match at the Royal Rumble in 2013, where they defeated Ryback and Team Hell No (Daniel Bryan and Kane) in a six-man tag team match. They continued to aid Punk in retaining his title against challengers such as The Rock and John Cena. At Elimination Chamber in 2013, Ambrose won his first singles title in WWE, while Rollins and Reigns helped Punk retain his title again in the chamber match.
At WrestleMania 29, The Shield challenged Team Hell No and Ryback for the WWE Tag Team Championship in a losing effort; this would be their final match as a team. Following WrestleMania 29, Ambrose turned on Rollins and Reigns after they failed to capture the WWE Tag Team Championship from Cody Rhodes and Goldust at Extreme Rules; this began a storyline where all three members of The Shield were portrayed as heels. Ambrose went on to pursue singles competition while Rollins and Reigns formed a tag team known as The Hounds of Justice; each would go on to have successful singles careers with Ambrose becoming WWE Champion while Rollins held both the Universal Championship and Intercontinental Championship simultaneously at one point.
The Reunion
WWE fans were wondering what happened to The Shield. The Shield was a popular wrestling stable consisting of Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, and Dean Ambrose. The group disbanded in 2014, but WWE confirmed that The Shield will be reuniting at the Fastlane pay-per-view.
Why did they reunite?
Initially, it appeared that the WWE Universe would never see The Shield back together again. After all, Seth Rollins betrayed his brothers Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns, and the resulting split was absolutely brutal.
Reigns and Ambrose went on to have a hugely successful singles career, with both men becoming WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Rollins, meanwhile, captured the WWE Universal Championship after cashing in his Money in the Bank contract at WrestleMania 31.
It became clear that all three members of The Shield were on a different path, but the fans never lost hope that one day they would see The Hounds of Justice ride again.
That day finally came at Survivor Series 2017, when Reigns, Ambrose and Rollins reunited to take on The Miz, Sheamus, Cesaro & Braun Strowman in a thrilling 5-on-3 Handicap Match.
The Shield picked up the victory in impressive fashion, but the most important thing was that The Hounds of Justice were back and standing tall side-by-side once again.
What has happened since the reunion?
Since the reunion of The Shield on the January 7, 2019 episode of Monday Night Raw, Rollins and Ambrose have held the Raw Tag Team Championship twice while Reigns has been Universal Champion.
At Extreme Rules on July 14, 2019, Rollins and Ambrose won back the Raw Tag Team Championship from Drew McIntyre and Shane McMahon in a tables match. The following night on Raw, it was revealed that Reigns had secretly been battling leukemia for 11 years and would be vacating the Universal Championship. Rollins and Ambrose then defended the Raw Tag Team Championship against Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode at SummerSlam on August 11, with Reigns making a surprise appearance to help his teammates win.
The Future
After a decade-plus of being one of WWE’s most dominant factions, The Shield finally disbanded in May 2019. What does the future hold for the former members of The Shield? Where will they end up? Let’s take a look.
What could happen next for The Shield?
The recent WWE Raw Reunion show saw the long-awaited return of The Shield. The trio of Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, and Dean Ambrose reform for one night only to take on the current incarnation of The Wyatt Family.
While it was great to see The Shield back together again, it does beg the question of what could happen next for the group. Here are a few possibilities.
1) The Shield could continue to make sporadic appearances.
This is probably the most likely scenario. The Shield was never meant to be a long-term group, and with all three members now having successful solo careers, it doesn’t make sense for them to try and reform permanently. Instead, they could continue to make sporadic appearances whenever WWE needs them (e.g. Raw Reunion, Survivor Series, WrestleMania).
2) Ambrose could turn heel and join forces with Rollins & Reigns’ rivals.
While this isn’t the most likely scenario, it would be an interesting twist. Ambrose has been a fan favorite ever since he turned babyface last year, but a heel turn could freshen things up for him. He could align himself with Rollins & Reigns’ rivals (e.g. Drew McIntyre, Bobby Lashley, Baron Corbin) and help them take down The Shield once and for all.
3) Rollins & Reigns could turn heel and join forces with Ambrose’s rivals.
This is a similar scenario to the one above, but with Rollins & Reigns turning heel instead of Ambrose. This would be a huge shock since both men are currently babyfaces, but it would certainly make for some interesting storylines going forward. Rollins & Reigns could align themselves with Ambrose’s rivals (e.g. AJ Styles, Samoa Joe) and help them take him down once and for all.
4) The Shield could split up permanently and feud with each other leading into WrestleMania 35.
This is perhaps the most intriguing possibility of all. While The Shield has had its share of disagreements over the years, they’ve always managed to patch things up before things got too out of hand. But what if this time was different? What if The Shield split up permanently and began feuding with each other leading into WrestleMania 35? This would create some must-see television and would definitely be a huge draw at WrestleMania itself.
