The NFL regular season is over, and that means it’s time for some head coaches to get the axe. Here’s a look at the coaches who were let go this year.
Bill O’Brien- Houston Texans
The Houston Texans fired Bill O’Brien on October 5th, 2020 after four seasons and a 52-48 record. O’Brien’s tenure was marked by inconsistency, as the Texans never won less than nine games in a season under him, but also never won more than 11. O’Brien was let go after an 0-4 start to the 2020 season.
Doug Marrone- Jacksonville Jaguars
Doug Marrone was fired by the Jacksonville Jaguars after just two seasons with the team. He led the Jaguars to a record of 10-6 in 2017, but the team regressed in 2018 and finished with a 5-11 record.
Anthony Lynn- Los Angeles Chargers
Anthony Lynn was relieved of his duties as head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers on January 5, 2020, after four seasons with the team. Lynn had a record of 33-31 with the Chargers, leading them to the playoffs in 2018.
Matt Patricia- Detroit Lions
Patricia was fired after three seasons with the Lions in which he had a 13-29-1 record. He was hired before the 2018 season to replace Jim Caldwell, who was fired after going 9-7.
Adam Gase- New York Jets
Adam Gase was relieved of his duties as head coach of the New York Jets on December 27, 2020. Gase compiled a record of 9-22 in two seasons with the Jets.
Vic Fangio- Denver Broncos
On January 2, 2020, Vic Fangio was fired from his position as head coach of the Denver Broncos after only one season. Fangio had led the team to a 6-10 record, missing the playoffs. Prior to his time with the Broncos, Fangio had served as defensive coordinator for several NFL teams, most notably helping the Chicago Bears turn their defense around and leading them to a Super Bowl appearance in 2018.
Dan Quinn- Atlanta Falcons
The Atlanta Falcons fired head coach Dan Quinn on Sunday, Oct. 11, after starting the season 0-5. The Falcons made the playoffs under Quinn in each of his first two seasons, but they collapsed to a 7-9 record in 2018 and then became the first team to blow a 28-3 lead in the Super Bowl.
Pat Shurmur- New York Giants
The New York Giants have fired head coach Pat Shurmur after two seasons, the team announced on Monday.
“Thank you to John Mara and Steve Tisch for giving me the opportunity to be the head coach of the New York Giants,” Shurmur said in a statement. “I am proud of the way our players and coaches fought all season long. I want to thank all of the members of our organization for their dedication and hard work.”
Shurmur finishes his tenure with a 9-23 record.
Matt LaFleur- Green Bay Packers
The Packers went 13-3 in LaFleur’s first season, winning the NFC North for the first time since 2016. But they were one-and-done in the playoffs, losing 28-23 at home to eventual NFC champion San Francisco. LaFleur is a Sean McVay disciple who was the Los Angeles Rams’ offensive coordinator before getting his first head coaching job with the Packers.
Matt Rhule- Carolina Panthers
Matt Rhule was fired as the head coach of the Carolina Panthers on December 21, 2020, after compiling a record of 4-10 in his only season with the team. Rhule was hired by the Panthers in January 2020 after seven seasons as the head coach of Baylor University.
