The NBA’s History

The NBA was founded in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America. The league adopted its current name, the National Basketball Association, in 1949 after merging with the rival National Basketball League. The NBA is composed of 30 teams: 29 in the United States and one in Canada.

The league began with just eleven franchises, all located in large cities on the East Coast. These original teams were: the New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, Philadelphia Warriors (now Golden State Warriors), Detroit Pistons (then Fort Wayne Pistons), Chicago Stags, Cleveland Rebels (disbanded before playing a game), Washington Capitols, Atlanta Hawks (then Tri-Cities Blackhawks), Pittsburgh Ironmen (disbanded after one season), St. Louis Bombers (disbanded after one season) and Rochester Royals (now Sacramento Kings).

Of these original eleven franchises, only three are still located in their original cities: the Knicks, Celtics and Hawks. After several decades of growth and relocation, the NBA today consists of thirty teams, scattered throughout the United States.

Origins

Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith in 1891 to provide an activity for his students during the cold winter months at the International YMCA Training School (now Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts. With a set of thirteen rules and a peach basket as a goal, Naismith’s game spread quickly throughout the U.S., with YMCAs popping up all over the country incorporating basketball into their activities programs.

In 1904, representatives from northeastern YMCAs gathered at a conference in Trenton, New Jersey, where they founded what would become known as the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). The AAU became the primary governing body of amateur basketball in America, holding tournaments each year to determine national champions. As interest and participation in basketball continued to grow, so did pressure on the AAU to allow collegiate players to compete for national titles. This finally occurred in 1936 with the inclusion of eight teams from across the country in what was then known as “The National Invitation Tournament” – now simply known as “March Madness”. In 1949, after years of debate and controversy, collegiate teams were finally allowed to compete for an NCAA championship title. The first NCAA Tournament was held that same year with eight teams competing for the title won by University of Oregon 60-54 over Ohio State University.

Meanwhile, there had been several attempts to form professional basketball leagues dating back to 1898. The first successful one was founded By Abe Saperstein in 1926 and took on what would become its now iconic name – The Harlem Globetrotters – two years later. In 1946, a group of owners from several major cities got together and formed what would become known as The Basketball Association of America (BAA), which would eventually merge with its rival National Basketball League (NBL) to form what we now know as today’s NBA in 1949. That same year saw another important milestone with African American players being signed to NBA contracts – Chuck Cooper by Boston Celtics and Nat Clifton by New York Knicks – breaking what had been an unofficial color barrier that had existed sincethe league’s inception. Earl Lloyd would also debut that season for Washington Capitols becoming first African American player to appear in an NBA game when he took to court on October 31st 1950 against Rochester Royals.. In 1951-52 Bill Russell joined Cooper on Celtics becoming first African American player drafted #2 overall into NBA following Clyde Lovellette who was drafted by Minneapolis Lakers.. These events laid strong foundations not just for today’s African American players but also international players which make up around 25% of all current NBA rosters.. Negro players were not commonly seen in professional basketball until after World War II ended
