History of Cloud9

Cloud9 is a North American esports organization, founded in 2013. It currently houses teams in Hearthstone, League of Legends, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Overwatch, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Dota 2, Heroes of the Storm and Smite.[1] Cloud9’s League of Legends team competed in the Riot North American League Championship Series (NA LCS), but they were relegated to NA Challenger Series after finishing in last place during the 2015 Spring NA LCS split. They qualified for the 2015 NA LCS Summer split after defeating Team8 in the promotion tournament. In September 2016, Cloud9 entered into a long-term strategic partnership with Jack Etienne.[2][3]

Cloud9 has seen success across a variety of games. Their Smite team won the 2016 Smite World Championship,[4] becoming the first North American team to do so. In February 2017 they became the first North American Counter-Strike: Global Offensive team to win a major tournament after defeating FaZe Clan in the ELEAGUE Major Boston grand finals.[5][6] Furthermore, as of June 2017, Cloud9 is one of four teams to have qualified for every single Major tournament held in CS:GO history.[7] The other three are Astralis, SK Gaming and Virtus.pro.

Cloud9 was founded on March 1st, 2013 by Jack Etienne.[8] The organization initially had rosters in League of Legends and SMITE. They picked up their first Halo team on May 14th,[9] followed by their first Call of Duty team on July 1st.[10] Their SMITE division won the IGN Pro League 5 SMITE qualifier on July 7th,[11][12] allowing them to attend the IPL 5 event from August 30th to September 2nd where they placed 5th-8th.[13] On October 6th it was announced that their Halo team had signed with compLexity Gaming.[14][15] That same day their black ops 2 roster disbanded as well.[16][17] In November they added ex-Counter Logic Gaming EU’s Starcraft 2 roster consisting of HerO, Welmu, CranK and Puppey[18], with former Evil Geniuses player DeMusliM as a coach/team manager/mentor.[19][20], who would later leave for Natus Vincere only days before DreamHack Bucharest 2013 where he placed 3rd-4th place loosing 0-2 against Kim ” Soulkey ” Seo-Yong in his final series[21]. With their new SC2 roster Cloud 9 placed 3rd at IEM Season VIII Sao Paulo[22], but failed to make it out of the group stage at ASUS ROG Winter 2013[23]. Shortly before IEM Katowice 2014 it was announced that PuPpy had parted ways with C9 and would instead be joining Team Secret,[24][25], being replaced hours later by Joick who joined from Yoe Flash Wolves[26]. At IEM Katowice C9 went 1-2 in their group dropping matches to mousesports and Alliance only managing to beat SuperMassive eSports[27].
