What Is Set In Tennis?

A look at what is Set in Tennis. How to keep score and what the winner is determined by.

Introduction

A tennis set is a sequence of games played with service alternating between games, ends and points. A set consists of a minimum of six games and a maximum of twelve, if the players are tied at six games each. A set is won by the first player to win six games, unless both players have won five before that point, in which case a seventh game (a tiebreak) is played to determine the winner. If one player has won seven games and the other five, that player wins the set 7–5. If both players win six games each, a tie-break is played to determine who wins the set. The tie-break may be played on any odd number of points from 1–7 inclusive; however, it must be odd in order for service to alternate between the two players. If it gets to 6–6 then either player may choose whether or not to play a seventh game (again as an odd number). In some tournaments there may be no tie-breaks; instead matches are decided on a best-of-five or best-of-three basis.

The Basics of Setting

When two opponents are standing on opposite sides of the net, one will hit the ball over to the other in an attempt to score a point. The player who hit the ball is now referred to as the server, while the player who received the ball is now the receiver. If the receiver is able to hit the ball back over the net, they will have successfully completed a service. In tennis, there are a few different ways to keep score. One way to score is by winning sets.

The Server

The server is the player who begins a tennis game by serving the ball into the opponent’s court. The server alternating service games with their opponent until one player or team has won a set.

A player may serve from anywhere behind the baseline, but must keep one foot on or behind the baseline when hitting the ball. A service motion consists of taking the ball behind the body and tossing it up into the air, then hitting it overhand into the opponent’s service court. The player may not touch the baseline or fence before or after hitting the ball. The player must hit the ball overhand and keep their elbow below shoulder height at contact.

A good serve is one that is hit flat and hard into the service box so that it lands within the service box and bounces up near to your opponent’s waist. A serve that hits too low will often be returned before it has a chance to bounce, while a serve that hits too high will be an easy return for your opponent.

The Returner

The returner is the player who hits the ball back to the other player after they have served. The returner can be standing anywhere behind the baseline, but must hit the ball before it bounces a second time. If the returner hits the ball into the net, it is called a “let” and the point is replayed. If the returner hits the ball out of bounds, it is called a “fault” and the server gets another chance to serve.

There are two main ways to return a serve:

The forehand: The most common way to hit a return is with a forehand. To hit a forehand, you will swing your racket Across your body and hit the ball on the opposite side of your body from where your racket is pointing. For example, if your racket is pointing to your right, you will hit the ball on your left. This can be done from anywhere behind the baseline, but it is most commonly done from near the center of the court on either side of where you think the serve will land.

The backhand: The backhand is not used as much as the forehand, but it can be very effective when done correctly. To hit a backhand, you will swing your racket across your body and hit The ball on the same side of your body as where your racket is pointing. For example, if your racket is pointing to your right, you will hit The ball on your right. This can be done from anywhere behind The baseline, but it is most commonly done from near The center of

The Different Types of Sets

In tennis, a set is a sequence of games played with service alternating between games, and ending when the count of games won meets certain criteria. There are a variety of different types of sets, the most common being the best of three sets and the best of five sets. Let’s take a closer look at the different types of sets.

The Standard Set

A set consists of a sequence of games played with service alternated between games, and is won by the first player to have won at least six games and at least two more games than the opponent. If the set score reaches 6–5 (or 5–6), one additional game is played. If the leading player wins that game, the set is won 7–5 (or 5–7). If the trailing player wins the game, a tie-break is played. A tie-break, played under a separate set of rules, allows one player to win one more game and thus the set, to give a final set score of 7–6 or 6–7.

A “love” set means that the loser of the set won zero games, colloquially termed a ‘bagel’. In tournament play, however, this cannot happen until five sets have been completed or agreed upon by both players.

The Tie-Break Set

The tie-break set is the most common type of set in professional tennis. It is played to a score of 7 points, with the player who first reaches 7 winning the set. If the score reaches 6-6, then a tie-break is played, in which the players compete to win at least 7 points by a margin of 2.

Conclusion

In summary, a set in tennis is won by the first player to win six games by a margin of two games or more. If the score reaches six games all, then a tie-break is played to determine the winner. A match is won by winning two out of three sets.
