Introduction

In baseball, as in life, Distance is relative. A home run that just clears the fence might be a foot further than one that barely gets over, but it’s not necessarily more impressive. The same can be said of a 500-foot home run versus a 600-foot home run. They’re both pretty unbelievable, but one is 50 feet further. So which is the longest home run ever hit?

In 2007, Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies hit a ball that traveled an estimated 504 feet. This is the farthest known ball to be hit in the history of baseball. The ball was hit off of a pitch from Mike Bacsik of the Washington Nationals and landed in the upper deck of Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.

The Farthest Ball Ever Hit by a major league player

In baseball, a home run is when the batter hits the ball and scores a run without the need for another player to hit the ball again. The record for the farthest distance that a major league player has hit a baseball is 502 feet, held by Babe Ruth. This record was set in 1921 during a game between the New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers.

The Farthest Ball Ever Hit by a minor league player

In May of 2007, Jay Bell of the Durham Bulls minor league team hit a ball an estimated 575 feet. The ball was hit during a game against the Toledo Mudhens and cleared the center field wall with ease. While it is impossible to know for sure how far the ball traveled, most experts agree that it is one of the longest hits in baseball history.

There have been several other balls hit that have come close to matching Bell’s hit, but none have been able to surpass it. In June of 2011, minor league player Mike Thompson hit a ball an estimated 550 feet. And in June of 2012, Mike Hessman of the Toledo Mudhens (yes, the same team Jay Bell hit his home run off of) hit a ball an estimated 545 feet.

So while we may never know for sure how far Jay Bell’s home run went, we can be pretty confident that it was one of the longest balls ever hit in baseball history.
