The American League West
The American League West is one of the three divisions of the American League (AL) in Major League Baseball (MLB). The division was formed when the AL expanded to 14 teams in ’61. It originally contained the California Angels, Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (then the Los Angeles Angels), Minnesota Twins (then the Washington Senators), Oakland Athletics and Seattle Pilots. When MLB redesignated divisions in ’69, it became a 16-team league with four divisions: two were all-new geographic divisions (East and West), while the other two—the American and National—divided existing leagues along different lines. The Pilots moved to Milwaukee in ’70 and became the Brewers; their place was taken by the newly created Milwaukee Brewers (later the Texas Rangers). In 1998, when Major League Baseball further expanded by adding another wild card team to each league—resulting in an odd number of teams per league for the first time ever—the AL West became one of only two three-team divisions ever created.
