The National League standings are the positions of the teams in the National League in baseball. The National League is divided into two divisions, the East and the West.
The National League
The National League of Professional Baseball Clubs, commonly referred to as the National League (NL), is the older of two leagues constituting Major League Baseball (MLB) in the United States and Canada, and the world’s oldest current professional team sports league. Founded on February 2, 1876, to replace the National Association of Base Ball Players (NABBP) of 1871–1875, the NL is sometimes called the Senior Circuit, in contrast to MLB’s other league, the American League, which was founded 25 years later.
East
The National League East is one of the six divisions of the National League in Major League Baseball. The division comprises 15 teams, arranged into three sub-divisions of five teams each.
The divisional alignment was introduced in 1994, when the National League was realigned into three divisions, with a fourth division (the Central) being added in 1998. The current alignment has been in place since 2013, when the Houston Astros moved from the NL Central to the AL West.

Central
The Chicago Cubs are in first place in the Central Division with a record of 34-17. The St. Louis Cardinals are in second place with a record of 33-19. The Milwaukee Brewers are in third place with a 31-22 record. The Pittsburgh Pirates are in fourth place with a 29-24 record. The Cincinnati Reds are in fifth place with a 23-30 record.
How the Standings Are Determined
The National League standings are determined by a team’s winning percentage. The team with the best winning percentage in each division is awarded the division title. If two or more teams have the same winning percentage, the team with the most wins is awarded the title.
Win-Loss Record
The win-loss record is the most important factor in determining the National League baseball standings. This is the number of games a team has won minus the number of games it has lost. If two teams have the same win-loss record, the next tiebreaker is head-to-head record.
Winning Percentage
In baseball, the winning percentage is the ratio of games won to games played. A winning percentage of .600 means a team has won 60% of its games. Winning percentage is calculated officials by dividing a team’s wins by its total number of games played (wins + losses + draws/ties). However, some purists argue that in order for a team’s record to accurately reflect its true winning percentage, its ties should be divided in half. This would give more weight to actual wins and losses, as opposed to draws/ties.

Determining Home-Field Advantage
In baseball, the standings or table is a cumulative record of the performance of each team over the course of the season. A team’s standing is based on their win-loss record. As of the 2013 Major League Baseball season, MLB has used a 162-game schedule for its regular season.In order to determine which teams will make it to the playoffs,MLB uses a system that takes into account both a team’s winning percentage and their divisional position.
The American League and National League winners of the divisional series advance to their respective league’s championship series. In each league, the team with the best record from the regular season faces off against the wild card team, which is determined by examining the records of all non-division winning teams to find the one with the best record. The two remaining divisional winners are ranked according to their regular season records, with the division winner having played more games within their own division facing off against the division winner with fewer games played within their division. From there,the four remaining teams battle it out in either a best-of-seven or best-of-five game series until only one team remains standing. That final team is declared that league’s champion, and they advance to play in baseball’s biggest tournament – The World Series – where they face off against the champion of the other league.
Determining Playoff Seeding
Major League Baseball (MLB) is a professional baseball organization, and the oldest of the major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada. A total of 30 teams play in the National League (NL) and American League (AL), with 15 teams in each league. The NL was founded in 1876, two years after the AL. After periods of cooperation and threat of a merger between the two leagues, they finally completed a merger in 2000.
The standings are important because they are used to determine playoff seeding. The team with the best record in each league earns a spot in the World Series, which is a best-of-seven playoff to determine the MLB champion. In addition, the two teams with the next-best records in each league earn a spot in what is called the Wild Card Game. This is a one-game playoff between those two teams to determine which team will advance to play in the Divisional Series. The Divisional Series is a best-of-five playoff between two division winners, and the winner of that series advances to play in the Championship Series. The winner of that series advances to play in the World Series.
