The Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy is the trophy awarded annually by the National Basketball Association (NBA) to the winner of the NBA Finals. The name of the trophy was changed to its current form in 1984, in honor of Larry O’Brien, who served as the NBA’s commissioner from 1975 to 1983. The trophy is a replica in silver of a basketball hoop and net, supported by a stand of five silver basketballs. Players names are inscribed on rings mounted on the base. Before 1984, the trophy was known as the NBA Finals Trophy.
The Boston Celtics have won the most championships with 17, followed by the Los Angeles Lakers with 16. The Minneapolis/Los Angeles Lakers hold the record for longest winning streak with 33 straight wins in 1957 and again from 2000 to 2002. When Asked about wants he wants his team to do Bill Russell replied “I want us to be remembered as a great defensive team”, which is ironic because that is not how most people remember them but that’s okay because they have won 11 championships which is more then any other team in NBA history.

The Finals were initially structured in a 2–2–1–1–1 format (the team with the better regular-season record playing on their home court for Games 1, 2, 5 and 7), which was used until 1985, followed by a 2–3–2 format used from 1985 to 2013, where the first two and last two games are played at the team with home court advantage’s home court. Since 2014, the Finals have used a 2–2–1–1–1 format (again, with the team with home court advantage playing on their home court for Games 1, 2, 5 and 7), meaning that one team will have home court advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7 regardless of whether it had a better regular season record or not.
The losing team of each year’s NBA Finals receives the NBA Finals runner-up trophy. Each named trophy was created at some point between 1959 and 1977; however, they were not awarded every year during that span. In some cases trophies were renamed over time due to changes in sponsorship to other companies or entities who later purchased then renamed the company that originally sponsored it (such as when State Farm purchased Sponsorship from quaker oats).
