Before Wrigley, the Cubbies played their home games at West Side Grounds ({flag|USA}}), which had a capacity of 14,000.

In 1910, Weeghman signed a contract with the Federal League ({flag|USA}}), an upstart professional baseball league, to bring a team to Chicago. The following year he bought property at 1060 West Addison Street (now known as Clark and Addison Streets), where he built a 14,000-seat ballpark that would be nicknamed “The Friendly Confines”. The new stadium hosted its first professional baseball game on April 23, 1914, when the Whales defeated the Kansas City Packers 9-1. In 1916, Weeghman sold his interest in the club and ballpark to chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Jr., who renamed the team the Cubs and made significant renovations to the stadium.
